Prejudiced instructor update

Well, Miss Penny's niece & hubby took the CCW class, & passed it. We haven't had time to discuss all of it in detail yet,, but they appreciated our help.
And they do plan a few more trips out here to get better at shooting & get correct instruction.

I also spoke with a well known gun shop owner locally,, and politely asked; "Do you know Mr. Crawford?" WITHOUT disclosing anything I already thought.
In short,, he said,, quite quickly; "That guy is **#*#*# nuts!" So, we had a little discussion,, and he allowed how the guy used to be ok & all,, but has gone off the deep end. Sadly,,, it does not help good gun owners anywhere when we have people like this in our "community."

So,, they passed & are happy,, and will be getting more open minded instruction soon!

It sounds a lot like some of the clowns in CO. If you go to a Sportsman's
Warehouse and take one of the "classes" offered there, you end up with
a four hour "class" that is mostly a long war story, and little else.

The NRA class for the same thing is twelve hours, includes a shooting
session, and a consistently presented set of materials.

It amazes me that there are so many consistently inconsistent Concealed
Carry classes. :roll: Sometimes just a few miles away from each other. :shock:

Dunno what this is about, but my instructor was a fountain of misinformation. Such as his insistence that Ruger had successfully marketed a smart gun that would not fire for anyone but the owner. Such as, if you fire a bullet straight up into the air, it will come back down and hit the ground at the same velocity it left the muzzle.

Things like that. He reminded me of Cliff Claven on Cheers.

When we went to the range for the practical test, I had to laugh when he showed up in his postal uniform.

CCW instruction is an unregulated small business, so what you see is what you get..... :roll:

I run across about the same situation with some gun shop owners - why I no longer patronize those particular ones, low prices notwithstanding.

Alan Korwin penned an article for GUNS magazine some time ago, examining the dilemma of under-qualified instructors.

Me - I asked one instructor I knew, once (over a cold pitcher):
Ever shot at a person?
Nope
Ever drawn your gun on a person?
Nope
Ever been detained for a carry circumstance?
Nope
Ever carried your gun into a bar, post office, or prohibited place, even by mistake?
Well, yes
Do you have a good firearms-law lawyer you can recommend?
Well, no

Huh. What am I going to learn from this guy?

"Every day you leave your front door carrying a gun, you have to believe you're ready to use it on another person. Otherwise just leave it home. " - words of wisdom from a GOOD (experienced) instructor.

Thanks for the update Ty. Glad they went through with the class and now know that not all instructors are created equal. Instruction is very important for new shooters. Even reading this forum can be good instruction. :D

Good job Ty and Penny! Sadly, the old adage "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch" is something that the anti-gun folks can and will use against us whenever they can. We must all follow in your footsteps and be diligent.

Most of us here are prejudiced (in favor of) Ruger firearms. Yet,, when I teach,, I always inject the FACT that good quality firearms are made by other companies. Why? Because I want students to understand there are many different things to learn & appreciate. But most of all,,, I want them to get a GOOD class to prevent a disaster or problem that gives anti-gunners ANYTHING to use against us. This includes being open & honest,, and admitting if you do not know something, or do not have experience in something.
A poor instructor injects their personal attitudes & prejudices into people & often can get them in trouble or hurt. And after talking to them a little,, and also discussing this instructor with a good local gun shop,, I know that many folks are actually steered away from him by the local shooting community.
It reminded me of a gun range owner, locally, who failed to properly teach the CCW class as required by NC law. Well, after seeing such gross ignorance & defying the laws,, we (Miss Penny & I) filed a complaint,, in a way that they did not know we did it. We got a SBI agent to go take their CCW class. Guess who lost their credentials???????
But worse than that,, are the people who get a BAD class & then (God forbid) get involved in a shooting. Guess who will potentially be charged with a crime? I encourage anyone who gets CCW to go online & study the written laws as put out by their state. No matter who their instructor was. In the case of some instructors,,, it has been an eye opener.

Having been on the other side of the table as well, there's also a LOT of this mentality in customers. The ones that take a single very basic course and see themselves as experts. better still are the ones that have only what they've taught themselves and are "experts.

I have to continue to remind myself of one fact.... "You don't know what you don't know until you know it"
