Plugging aftermarket sling stud hole

I recently got a really nice 96/44, pretty sure it's unfired but last owner added aftermarket sling studs that fall out. I want to plug the holes so I can mitigate any chance of the stock cracking. I'm considering wood plug with wood glue or wood glue mixed with sawdust. Any suggestions?

The correct repair would be to drill out the holes and plug them with a wood plug. It will be tough to match and will always show.

The collect ability is gone, So I would probably epoxy the sling studs into the stripped out holes.

But I like sling studs on my rifles.

I've got to agree. The repair is going to wink at you, might be some sort of master craftsman that can access a plug so close in color and grain it's un-noticeable.

If you are willing to go out of the box, consider going to a set of flush fit type sockets. Ignore them and you don't have the studs hanging up. Use them and they are stronger, in that they engage more wood.

I would rather have a wooden dowel shaped and glued in, stained to match than a sling stud.

Remove the butt plate. Using 60 grit paper sand an area and save the shaving. Plug the boles with a dowel and, using some clear drying glue, top off the dowels with the shaving (sanding dust). It should match the oem when finished.

You could run a brass screw into the hole, cut it off, and file it flat.
