I mentioned on another forum of some shots I tried, and did, many years ago. As a youngster, I had the ambition of becoming an exhibition shooter. And I set up many shots for practice.

One of my targets then was to use the empty cores of toilet paper and paper towels. I would tape each end with masking tape and shoot through end to end. This was from a distance of only about ten yards or so, sometimes even closer, and really was not as hard as it may seem. I must admit that many times I cut the sidewall in doing these shots.

As I got proficient I then tried empty shotgun shells, shooting through the open end. This usually blew the brass base off, but the bullet hole was clean in the base of the shell.

Once I even shot a .38 bullet into the mouth of a .38 special case, the bullet lodged near the head of a badly split case. But the cases became hard to find often in grassy areas, as they went flying wildly when hit.

Unfortunately I lost my practice ranges, and was never able to connect with anyone wanting to go the cost of ammunition for me. But sure had a lot of fun in those days!

He's bump firing. I've done it with a 1911 when I was young and silly. You can really empty a pistol that way. That guy looks like he can hold the gun tighter than I could but then he's got a pretty large base to anchor things. Here's some others doing it:

For those that can't go shooting as often as they would like, maybe consider shooting wax bullets. You can do this in your garage or back yard if your neighbors will put up with the noise.

We shot empty shotgun hulls at 25 yards with .22s also shot shotgun hulls in midair with revolvers. ( missed a lot too of course).

Noise is an issue, I live in a townhouse.

Air guns, or even air soft guns, are another very quiet option.

I have several airguns. If I stepped out the door with one a swat team would be here in minutes.
Illinois... :(

You have my sympathy, FWIW ! :(

You can also use Aguila Colibri powderless .22 in a revolver. They come standard 350 fps and "super" 500 fps or so, both as quiet as a pellet rifle. The propellant is just the primer and the bullet is a little 20 gr pill. Great for the garage with a light backstop.

Shooting wax bullets in a revolver also uses only the primer in the case, no powder. Not very loud.
