Pizza RANT!

For what has seem like years, I have been getting take out from Papa Johns. The large, hand toss, peperioni, mushroom & black olive has been a bit of $13.

Last night I called my order in, didn't wait for the total and when I picked it up they wanted $20!
Of course I asked for the manager, who explained the "special" I had been getting is no longer available.
He suggested the new special I should order is the same large 3 ingerant and a "cookie" for $15 plus change.

I don't want a "cookie" so that will be my last Papa Johns :evil:

Whenever I call a pizza place I ask what their specials are. Then I ask them how can get xxxxxx (what I want) cheapest. I make them do the calculating. They usually can come up with something in the ballpark. I do admit I am pretty easy when it comes to pizza but there are favorite variations.

Wait until you go to a store, what you want is up on their board at one
price and they try to charge you a lot more. I pointed out that he (I was
talking with the store owner) had the price posted, but he insisted it was
more. I turned and walked out.

Funniest thing, I believe I was not the only one doing that because he went
out of business within six months of that incident.

There is a superb little pizza place just down the street from me. Inexpensive, but I always make sure of the price and take their little handout menu with me.
NOT that I use it that often....I put myself through college working at a pizza parlor and haven't really eaten all that much since, if you know what I mean...

Our house loves to order pizza from Domino's. They have a pizza watcher game you can play during the 30 minutes or so it takes to deliver.

We don't order often but last Friday we tried Pappa John's for the first time. It was "acceptable " not as good as Domino's.... but I thought it was funny as on the website you can split the check, they must sell lots of pizza to college students. Pappa John's was a little cheaper than Domino's and I felt their Web site to order was easier to use.

Is this how you guys are ordering pizza? It's pretty nice and you can add or subtract ingredients to get the pizza you want and see the price as you do so. For example on Domino's Web site, a medium pizza of whatever kind last Friday was more expensive than a large. Not sure why. Some special or other.

You could always have Lou Malnaties (sp) flown in frozen out of Chicago. Oh... ...hmmm. just thinking ahead for next weekend! Thanks!

I don't do chain pizza places much anymore. Mainly because we have an incredible mom and pop pizza place a mile and a half from our home. There is also another great dive pizza place about a half hour away, which is literally a bare bones, hole in the wall. Whatever they scrimp on for furnishings, dishes, etc. they spend on ingredients because their pies are fantastic. They even make their own mozzarella in house. Most of their pizzas are $15 or under too. It also happens to be about three doors down from a great little coffee house and cafe. Perfect for a nice quiet date night with the wife. I think last time I got a pizza with roasted red pepper, ricotta cheese and basil.

I don't do chain pizza places much anymore. Mainly because we have an incredible mom and pop pizza place a mile and a half from our home. There is also another great dive pizza place about a half hour away, which is literally a bare bones, hole in the wall. Whatever they scrimp on for furnishings, dishes, etc. they spend on ingredients because their pies are fantastic. They even make their own mozzarella in house. Most of their pizzas are $15 or under too. It also happens to be about three doors down from a great little coffee house and cafe. Perfect for a nice quiet date night with the wife. I think last time I got a pizza with roasted red pepper, ricotta cheese and basil.

We have the same here so the chains have gone by the wayside for us. It is the same for us with places like Olive Garden which isn't bad tasting but very high for pasta. Locally we have a pizza place which is great and another Italian restaurant(not only pizza) and we both like veal dishes like veal cacciatore and veal marsala and then get a pizza for a couple of meals in the same week.

Five meat stuffed crust pizza is my favorite. It's a heavyweight pizza for serious eaters like me. As I grossly overeat it makes a satisfying bloat in my stomach and provides musical entertainment later in the evening (dinner and a show). For extra punch, I place some super hot pepperocinis (sp?) on my section as it bakes on a pizza stone. Wash it all down with a warm diet cola and the eructation echos through the house, and little chunks ride the foam up my esophagus into my mouth where they can be re-chewed for a satisfying revisit. Next morning after coffee gets things moving, there's the pleasure that comes with creating a masterpiece. It's a win-win all the way around for me. Your mileage may vary. Don.

The value is just not there even at $10 we felt we were paying to much, not only that but the size has also shrunk, I think their large is smaller than the medium use to be.

Pizza Hut lost our business forever because of price so now we rarely eat Pizza anymore, and if we do we just buy a Little Caesars Pizza, they are not very good but affordable still under $10 for a large.

I'm pretty spoiled. I'm not in a very likely area but we have fantastic pizza, homemade Italian and Asian restaraunts in a short distance. I also have a fantastic coffee place 10 minutes from me that flies coffee in from all over the globe and roasts it in house. It's reasonable too.

I love pizza, but as some mentioned, most of these places are barely passable as pizza. Little Caesars............. would as soon eat the box. Don't know what more you expect for 5 bucks.

As far as food going up............well it is what it is. Gas goes up, but I don't quit driving. Good food is one thing I have no problem paying for

Just as a note. Their small pizza is $6.75 and is a 12" pizza with $1.00 per each additional ingredient.

Wife#1 nailed a pizza crust recipe for high elevation (above 6000') and she goes wild, cooking 2-3 at a time , so the only store-bought pie we get nowadays is a local one-man EXCELLENT pizza place or sometimes PapaJohn's, which we both like above the others. This is saying something for two who grew up on the north coast.

Still, even cooking a few at a time at home, it's easy to send 20-25 bucks on ingredients, so a 15-17 pizza made right is still a deal of sorts.

The question is - has there ever been a dog born that didn't love greasy pizza crust??

Pay attention to the ads. Quite often The Hut has $10, any pizza, any size. Perfect time to get a specialty at a reasonable rate.

As far as Little Squeezers goes, I consider them the Mickey D's of pizza. Rarely actually good , but always consistent and familiar if your in a hurry.

We use to like Papa John's but the last several times their Pizzas have gone down hill; less ingredients, less cheese and cost more. Their TV ad is a LIE and I wonder if the two near us are maybe Franchise operations that are scrimping on their ingredients to UP their profits. WHATEVER, BUT NEVER AGAIN will Papa John's see my shadow on their floor or hear the rustle of my cash.
We'll try a couple of others, maybe that deep dish Bacon pizza that they have been advertising on TV.

Dominos is much better now than it used to be. We have a Papa Murphy's here........not bad, but we have several REALLY good pizza places within 30 minutes, so that leaves most of the chains and such as just mediocre. Now there are a few chain joints that ARE good, such as Pie in the Sky, Mellow Mushroom, California Pizza Kitchen

Yeah we do keep a eye out to see if they do their $10 any pizza, any size, deal they haven't done that for a long time and not sure they ever will again now they raised the price so high, we don't mind paying more money for a real good pizza but Pizza Hut value wise for what they give you for the money it's just not worth any more than $10 they skimp on toppings and shrink the size, we only buy it cause we really like the deep pan crust and their sauce and their are near by.

Folks, give JFB a break. He didn't sound too serious in his "rant." (He did get his pizza, and was still eating on it the next day.)
As with MANY businesses, when they go to a "chain" or a franchise, they lose a lot of quality. They are in business to make money, and just like most folks, they want the best profit margin they can get. It doesn't matter what the business is, if they aren't making money, they will go out of business.

Now, poor management, poor quality, etc will cause anybody to fail.

As noted above, the best places are the "Mom & Pop" type joints, where the owners have just ONE business, and if they want to succeed & make a living, they have to have a quality product, and give the customer a good value for their dollar.


Now, let's flip it over to a different attitude.

Just yesterday, I stopped in a grocery store to grab a few items. I always scan the sales flyer for specials on stuff I need or want. Well, they had a special on frozen, pre-cooked shrimp. We like to keep some handy to "kick up" some of our cooking here, so I grabbed a bag. It was advertised, on sale, at $8.48 a bag/lb. There was a sale placard on the door, and it all matched up. However, at the register, (I was doing self check-out) it rang up as $11.98 a bag/lb. I politely asked the attendant, to which, she called over a manager, and they removed the higher price completely off my ticket. Yet, they did NOT charge me for the shrimp. I politely pointed out that it didn't charge me the corrected price, and the manager told me; "If the machine overcharges you, it's our mistake & the item is free!" I got a free bag of shrimp!

Good & bad can happen in business!
