Anybody enjoy smoking a pipe?

What tobacco?

Just got one, can remember my great uncle smoking a pipe with some kinda cherry tobacco, always smelled good.

He used to smoke while deer hunting, always killed deer, so much for scent control, LOL

I love the smell of a pipe. Lot of good memories. There used to be a tobacco shop in the mall, years ago. I would just go in there and stand around.

I break all my pipes in with Half & Half. Then move on to English Tobacco. It won't fill a room with the scent of Middleton Cherry or Captain Black, but aromatics are designed to let those not indulging enjoy. JMHO YMMV. Dunhill 965, Early Mourning, or Standard Blend. But Half & Half is the go to.

I love the smell of a pipe. Lot of good memories. There used to be a tobacco shop in the mall, years ago. I would just go in there and stand around.

It was my pipe smoking father’s opinion that pipe smokers were above average citizens, they spent so much time loading, tamping and lighting their pipes that they had little time for mischief. He always smoked half and half tobacco, which he assured was half tobacco and half horse apples. I fondly remember the cherry tobacco smell, but not from home

My Dad smoked a pipe for some years. In the mall at a city not too far away there was a tobacco shop that custom blended whatever you wanted and that is where he got his smoke from. I tried a puff as a kid and never went back....

Half & Half is Burley and Bright. Pipe smokers will note that Burley has a soapy taste while bright is much sharper to the tongue. Net neither burns with a cherry scent.

Was years ago. Captain Black was my prefered commercial but graduated to custom copy from a pipe shop. But moved to cigarettes & did that far too long before giving it all up.
Still have my Comoy's, & think a bowl might be enjoyable, but not chancing crossing the line back to nicotine. Still crave a cigar as well.

Oh Cigars, Pipes, and chew still grace my bad habits. But the day my better half told me she couldn't quit if I still smoked my unfiltered Camels when we found out she was pregnant, well I crushed that pack and never had another.
Got to admit I was a bit crabby for a month or so, and when the Doc tells me I've only got a week to live don't get in the way as I race to the Dunkin Doughnuts, while smoking a Camel, on my way way to a Biscuit &Gravy Breakfast, munching on White Chocolate all the while during this frenzy. May even find a few more Pure Sugar or Carb highlights to indulge on the way. Guess one can only hope to go out like Pierre in flames.

He told me ya just have to get your pipe broke in and it will start tasting better. Well, I didn't have time for that so I threw the pipe away.

We usually rolled that cherry stuff back then.Pipes not handcrafted from corn cobs cost way more than rolling papers. YMMV. Whittling a plug of Working Days was a touch more expensive than just biting of piece. LOL.

I have my Dad’s, but never smoked it. I remember when he bought this one he gave his collection of 30 or 40 away to my uncle. This one was special to him.

It’s made from a gourde the bowl is Meerschaum.

I also have fond memories of going to the mall with him and smelling the tobacco.

Call me crazy, but sometimes I smell tobacco in my basement and turn around expecting to see him.

I am a non smoker but certain pipe tobaccos smell good.
In 2016 and 2017 I worked at a hospital as a Stationary Engineer. In the hallway outside of the boiler room there was a row of portraits of deceased doctors dating from the early 1900's to the present.
Of course there was a no smoking policy in the hospital but around 9pm every night I would smell cherry pipe tobacco by that row of portraits. I mentioned something to one of the switchboard operators about smelling the tobacco and she asked where I was smelling it. When I told her that it was by the dead doctors she asked by which one.
So the next night I looked at which picture it was by and told her. It was a doctor who had died 30 years before and that place was where he used to go nightly to have a pipe full before he went home.
That was only one of many strange occurrences that happened in that hospital but I still remember it vividly

As I grew up, my dad smoked a pipe. He had quite a few, even some of the special carved Meerschaum pipes. Dad smoked King Albert or Half-and-Half. When he had a special occasion like a birthday, we would buy him some flavored tobacco and he seemed to enjoy them. I know that I enjoyed smelling it. I did take up smoking a pipe during my younger years, but not as a daily activity. There was a tobacco shop where I lived in Southern California that had rows and rows of the glass jars that I would go down the row smelling each one of them until I found what I thought would be a fun tobacco to try. I still have some of my dad’s pipes and I had seen them a couple years ago, but have no idea where they are now.

Dad smoked both pipes and cigarettes. When he went into the hospital for a foot surgery he decided to quit smoking. And in typical dad fashion never smoked again. He ended giving away his pipes (some rather expensive) but always kept his pipe rack. I have it now. Still no pipes but it's on my dresser and I see it every day and think of dad. Sometimes it hurts, but most days I just smile and start my day.

My father smoked both a pipe and cigars up until I was about 11 or 13 then he quit. I've tried a pipe over the years but just seems like too much work. (I'm a cigar man) I do have a nice collection of pipes from my father in law as well as some I got at an auction... if any of you guys are interested I might be willing to pass some or all of them on. I'll probably keep the church warden one.... picked it up in an antique store in Tryon N.C. according to the owner it belonged to a woman who flew B-17s across the Atlantic to England during WWII.

Oh and we have several bars here in town that are cigar bars.... one is part of my tobacco shop.... but don't think about moving here the weather is terrible, crime is rampant, traffic is terrible and the woman are ugly and mean.

We have the same problem in southwest Idaho, but it is MUCH worse. You would be sad if you moved here. So, for your own safety please stay away.

I haven't smoked since I was in the 8th grade, but I always liked smoking a pipe, and if I was ever inclined to smoke again, it would probably be a pipe. A good cigar is nice too. I always HATED cigarettes!

YUP, I quit smoking somewhere around 6th (or eight?) grade. NASTY habit IMHO... Someone ought to start a post about BAD HABITS....

Dad quit when i was a lil guy, and i havent smelled borkum riff cherry rum since. He eventually traded off or gave away his old pipes. Im sure thats how i got my first knife, by trade. i always wanted a knife, and before my 5th he said you have a month, learn to tie a bowline, anytime anywhere, on anything, and ill get you a knife. I did, and the knife was a remington scout knife, missing the bullet.i figured he traded a pipe for it. He kept them in a drawer in his big toolbox in the garage. Alas, somebody stole it about the time i found a kabar barlow, which he cleaned up for me. He did such a good job, i thought he had trsded another pipe for a new one. It was stolen, too. Dad says, thats why its called a pocket knife, not a leave'er'ite knife. Cant just leave'er right there and turn your back on it and expect it to still be there when you get back to it.

When I was stationed at Torrejon AB, Spain, (1986-1989) I smoked a pipe. One of the places we went TDY to was Turkey as it was one of our alternate stations in case of war. I was able to pick up these merschaum pipes in Turkey and a VERY good price (the 2nd one cost me less than $50 - I priced in the US in 1990 at a tobacco shop and they wanted $200 for it) I only ever smoked one of them. It will be shown on my next post.

The last pipe shown is actually ceramic, it is a Lladro (as in Lladro Figurines from Spain). It is actually 2 pieces, the holder and the pipe and it is actually smokable, just don't know how it would smoke

Is all that bad weather, crime, and ugly, mean women along the coast, or just Myrtle Beach?

Do they still have signs posted that dogs and sailors must keep off the grass? Fish wives are sailors specialty. But I have noticed that a pipe stands alone, but a cigar needs to be paired with a drink to fulfill the experience. (A Cuban Maduro and a Bailey's & Strong Columbian coffee)

I still smoke a pipe time to time, especially when we are camping or around the firepit at home. Have a couple of "Missouri Meerschaums" and a long-stem Dr. Grabow. I buy my tobacco from a tobacco shop near home, their own cherry blend. Years ago, I smoked Middletons cherry blend or Paladin black cherry. I dont think they make that anymore... Borkum Riff was also good.

I smoked pipes off and on for many years. Still have them all.
And an occasional social cigar.
I reminisce of the aromas of my Dad's and Grampa's pipes and home rolled cigarettes.
In my garage I have one of my Dad's pipes. Nothing special, and sometime thru the years he repaired it with electrical tape, but if I close my eyes and smell the bit, there is still some pipe aroma.

When I smoked a pipe there were so many designer tobaccos to choose from, but some I really enjoyed were from a franchise tobacconist called the Tinderbox. I could go in that store and breath in the wonderful aroma and never have to light up.

At Christmastime this year, I bought my boy a nice pipe, with a bag of Douwe Egbert's Amphora. He says he's smoked it but I haven't seen so. That little 65-cent pouch of 50 years ago is now 15-bucks!:unsure:
