Just an added note on pin gauges. What set or sets to get? The set I have, has met 99% of my needs over the many years of gunsmithing. It runs from .060 to .500 in .001 increments. I have noticed absolutely no size or tolerance variation in any of my gauges over the years. As long as they are ground properly out of good material, they will last you a lifetime of good service!.....................Dick :wink:

Also, when you order (got mine from Grizzly, the CEO is a benchrest shooter) you order either a "plus" set or a "minus" set. There's a .0002 in tolerance on my set, which is a "minus". That means the tolerance is to the smaller end. Example: a .430 in gauge in a minus set is no smaller than .4298 in and no larger than .4300 in.
I don't use all in the set, but having revolvers in .357, 9mm, .41, .44, and .45 I have used a fair number and some of them a whole lot while firelapping.
I have used some as mandrels when honing out sizing dies (I cast bullets) and measuring said sizing dies and crimping dies.

The pin gages are certainly reasonable price wise but the thirty-five dollars for shipping seems outragous. I think I'll stick to other sellers that have a littler more reasonable shipping cost.

So, does anybody offer a pin gauge set of .250-.500 where the shipping isn't outrageous? I especially like the idea of a "minus" set.

I look at the overall cost of what I am buying. If you go to Enco or MCS any of the other name suppliers on the web you are looking at $150 + shipping as a starting point. I looked at some individual pins for a specific caliber and some places were charging $11.90 a pin. The set I bought came to less than 20 cents a pin. What difference does it make if you pay $10 for the product and $40 dollars for shipping if your other option is $40 for the product and $10 for shipping unless you think you might return the item for a refund? My set is made in China and I have no idea where Vermont American or other sets are made. For the little bit of use mine will see the price I paid was acceptable. When I am looking at buying a Ruger revolver online I look at the Total Cost and compare from there. The set I got weighs 25 pounds and would not fit fit any of the USPS flat rate mailing boxes. Don't get me wrong, I look for cheap shipping also.

I purchased the set from Grizzly also. With shipping, I believe the total came to about $90. They were out of stock when I ordered and they took a couple months to get them. I ordered them after reading all the threads about fire lapping. I have several revolvers and thought they would be handy to have. And none of my barrels ended up having a constriction, so no fire lapping for me yet!
