P97 WOW!!

I picked up my new to me P97 today. I brought it home and field stripped it. It looked a little more used than my P95s but they were like new and the P97 looks to have been shot a little. It's still in great shape only slight handling marks on the frame and a little wear on the finish of the barrel where 45 ACP is stamped inside the ejector port. Anyway I reassembled it and took it to the field down behind my house. It has been raining and snowing so I didn't set up for a real test I just tossed a plastic mellow yellow bottle out in the field and took aim. First shot bingo right on target. I walked that bottle out of range with the first 4 shots. Man, it was great! After about 20 more shots without any failures I went back home(with a big ol' grin on my face).

Congratulations! Nothing quite like getting a new (or new to you) gun. Especially one that shoots well for you.

It feels great to have a 45 that I can actually hit what I'm shooting at with. I've had a 1911 for a while but just couldn't get use to it. I always shoot low with the 1911 , it just doesn't feel right in my hand. I'm not knocking the 1911 I think it's a great gun, just not for me. As I said the P97 was on target first shot and it just feels natural in my hand.

I am a huge P-series fan....
Although don't own a P97...know a ton of guys that do,and all love them!

We share the same thoughts...

I owned 2 1911 design guns.....and agree the DESIGN ROCKS.........
but like you, just didn't fit my hand.

I so ENVY the masses, 2 gun choices...GLOCKS and 1911's that the gun's fit their hands!!!!!!!!!
That has to be like 95% of the shooters out there!!!!!!!!

JMHO of course...but the polymer gripped based Rugers,are like the aluminum framed models....will last forever...betting yer new purchase is JUST BROKEN IN! ;)

Congrats on your new gun. A good choice. I kinda like my Ruger autos and the P97 has been my main carry gun for going on 6 yrs now. :)

I bought my P97DC new quite a few years ago. I knew nothing about Ruger but wanted a 45 acp semi and this was in the gun case at what seemed like an outstanding price (if I remember correctly I paid $379 NIB). It has never had a misfire of any kind for me and is as accurate as my old eyes can shoot it. I've always loved this gun but have often thought about trading it in on a Colt Commander or something similar, but then I think about how much I would have to pay and would I really end up with anything better than what I already have? I've met a few guys at the range shooting newer Ruger semi's who have asked if I would sell them the 97 but I have always declined.

I'm new to Rugers, but in the last month I have bought two P95s and a P97. I'm not rich I just drained my checking account,hope nothing breaks anytime soon lol. I was a little worried about the finish wear on the barrel where it's stamped 45 ACP. It's not a lot but neither of my P95s have this. Is this normal?

I'm not running high priced guns down, but for dependability and accuracy, the P-series pistols will be it the came category as pistols that cost twice as much.

Have you heard of any problems with the polymer body cracking or breaking under normal usage? That is really the only thing I thought about where an all steel 1911 might be better. As to reliability I agree. I have owned a Kimber that cost triple what the Ruger cost and after three trips back to Kimber and still not working right, I traded it in for a new S&W revolver. My P97 has been fired significantly but not in the multi-thousand round category and has never given me a single issue regardless of the ammo that I fed into it.

Nope. I've heard of some being scuffed up from hard use(or misuse) but no breakage. BT

The P97 frame is quite durable. I have seen one broken at the dustcover from being dropped/impacted but not from firing. The way the pistol was designed [with the camblock setup] alleviates much of the impact force to the frame while firing.
