P85KII Slide jammed. Repair help

Hey guys, I'm in training to use handguns, and wishing to head to the states some time to do the pistol armorers course you lucky guys and gals have.

I have a blooper though. My ruger 85KII slide will not slide off.
Steps i take:

There's no mag, chamber empty. scratch of my nads with the muzzle. all standard fare.
I rack it back, lock the slide. Push the little thing down inside. Release the slide, and then pull the slide back the tiny bit to pull the slide lock and slide pin out till it is no longer holding the slide. From vids i saw the slide should now just slide forward and off the from.

no matter what. at this point the side is catching on something. and not sliding off the frame. This gun was taken apart before before me, but not in this manner.

What could have caught, and is there anything i can do?

And yep im an utter newbie. Australia has strict gun laws. We cant carry firearms unless your law enforcement, security (with a hell of a case to pove you need to carry) or military. So still learning the ropes!.

The hammer needs to be decocked, if the hammer is back the slide will not come off freely.

Having the ejector down would make the gun decock when the slide closes..
Look up in the magwell & see if the ejector is still down/forward
If Not reach up in there with something/screwdriver etc & gently rock it forward, also make sure the slide lock lever is pulled out as far as possible..
It is possible for the little leg on the ejector that pushes the sear out of the way to wear to were it doesn't hold into place like it should..

BTW Cheesewhiz a buddy of mine gave me a slingshot just like that Thanksgiving day along with a bag of ball bearings..

He didn't mention that he decocked/put it on safe, before disassembly.

It's been a while since I took down my old P85 but if I recall you can push the ejector down and when you let the slide forward a bit too much and pull it back to pull the lever, with the safety off it resets and the slide will not come off.

As far as the slingshot goes, "you'll put your eye out" :lol:

Are you using the correct side-to-side, then up-and-down action when scratching your baby-makers with the gun? This is a classic mistake that people make when field stripping the P85.

Actually you are suffering from an incorrect order of operations.

1. Check that the gun is not loaded. Remove magazine, rack the slide back and lock it in place with the slide release lever. Double check that the gun is not loaded.

2. Hold the gun in your right hand. Use your left hand to reach down into the slide-ejection port and push the ejector lever downwards towards the magazine-well in the handle.

3. Grasp the gun by the slide with your left hand. Ease the slide backwards so that the slide release lever is NOT engaged but do not let the slide move forwards. Doing this takes the load off the takedown pin and allows you to remove it. While you are holding the slide back use your other hand to push the takedown pin (which is actually the slide-release lever) thru the gun so that the barrel link is no longer retained by the pin. Note, the pin/slide-release-lever is not supposed to be removable from the gun, it stays attached to the grip frame.

4. Slowly release the slide forwards and slide the Slide off the front of the gun.

That should do the trick.

If not, follow this procedure:

1. Call Ruger customer service. Be sure to identify yourself as Roger.
2. As soon as you are done saying hello, Dial 1, then 26, then bark like a dog,
3. Dial 1 26 times,
4. Cup your private bits in your left hand.
5. Stand on one foot while holding the phone between your teeth.
6. Rub your tummy in a Counter Clockwise rotation and be sure to explain fully the problems to the customer service representative from Ruger...all the while holding the phone in your teeth.

If that doesn't work, I don't know what will.

Actually I might have gotten part of that wrong. I am not sure if the takedown pin actually mates with the barrel link ring or not, but the rest of that procedure should be good.

Seems like someone should have posted a takedown procedure on Youtube. Try searching for P89 as well. Its the same procedure as the 85.

BTW, what are Australian police/security people doing with antiques like the P85? Not that there is anything wrong with the Pseries guns...I have one myself, but still, its a 20+yr old gun at this point.

I have a P85 that I purchased new in 1990. Shortly after purchase I sent it back to Ruger for the "MKII" recall modification. I will be honest with you, I usually have to refresh my feeble memory by referring to the instruction manual:

to field strip the pistol. I know that I have the original paper copy of the manual somewhere.....??

Heck, there was no youtube back when this "tank" was produced. I am happy that Ruger has put a pdf copy of the manual online for reference. The pistol is built like a tank, and it still keeps working......

Just pulled my P85MKII out from under my pillow (jk).. you know with all this P-Series talk going on..

I did a quick tear down, wipe and oiled it.

You CAN NOT remove the slide if the safety is on..Dumb question here...But you did have the safety off, right?
