I'm with powder smoke here.
My home, rural carrier is a lazy, fat woman who will not do anything that is inconvenient to her. Heck, once,, when I was out there,, and asked her politely to make sure the door to my box was closed,, especially in rainy weather,, she snapped back that my door was too hard to close. I politely,, (as much as I could muster,) told her it was a regulation box, and the door was not hard to open or close,, it just required her to use a little effort. It snaps into place,, and is NOT hard at all. She also refuses to get out of her car to drop off a package,, even when she sees someone is home. She'd rather put a note in the box to make me drive the 9 miles out of my way to go to the PO to pick it up. She won't even drive the 150 ft to my door & blow the horn to get me to come out for a package.
So,, I've been glad I've kept the PO box at a DIFFERENT post office that has been in my family since WWII. It's closer to my home,, (4.6 miles,) the staff is very good, and it's easier to drop by there than go the opposite direction to my home address PO. I live just across a county line, and as such, a different PO district.
Damaged packages, missing contents, (Flatgate once sent me a grip frame,, and all I got as an empty box,) are the norm for my rural carrier. Complaints have been ignored,, and even flat out lied about.
BUT,, the Lake Lure PO,, where I prefer all my mail come to is great. The carriers there do a good job,, as I know that when I lived in my cabin,, they were excellent. The staff inside,, also great folks to deal with. Once I had a guy trying to buy a gun stock, to ship to Japan,, and it was illegal for him to own it. My Postmaster was VERY helpful in everything,, as was US Customs. I was actually surprised when I went to him, and told him how Customs wanted me to set it up to ship etc. (They wanted to catch this guy in Japan,) and my Pm immediately got out the books & all on how to ship stuff etc. I was impressed at his knowledge & professionalism in all of it. He's now retired,, and his replacements since have been quite good as well.
Like the guy Mobuck mentioned,, some people will do no more than the absolute minimums,, and make others have to do extra stuff that they could easily do,, or are supposed to do. "Customer Service" suffers in all places in this country. But good customer service is greatly appreciated.
