Opinion needed, keep or sell

I have a Savage model 71 Favorite Commemoritive model in excellent condition, no box or papers. I am having trouble deciding whether to sell it or keep it. The older I get, the less I care about "collector" (guns strictly foe collecting) guns. This rifle has been shot a little. If I keep it, I will drill and tap the barrel for a "3/8" tip off" mount and mount an old vintage 22 scope on it and enjoy shooting it. I love single shots. I have seen NIB specimens going for over $500 and more. If I could not sell this one for $400, I am thinking I should mount the scope and shoot it. What do you guys think?

What do I think? I don't think it would sell for even $400.

Modern commemoratives are not what they're cracked up to be, in appreciating in value.

Your gun, to me, is just a shooter, but an expensive one. So, you've gotta decide what it's worth, to you.

I like the Favorites. There's nothing wrong with keeping a really nice one, just to shoot. And if you do, it's your gun, so again, you've gotta decide if it's worth it to you, drilling for a scope mount.

RJ556, The "Favorite" is a great little squirrel shooter! If it were mine, I would use it with the "open" sights that came on it for the extra "challenge"! I personally think they are overrated as a collectable. Not much of a collector demand for these..........................Dick :wink:

I agree with Wayno and Pinecone. Few collectables are what they are cracked up to be. I don't consider the Favorite to be much of a collectable. Shoot it and have fun with it.

OK guys. Thanks for all of your comments. I will keep the favorite. And I will drill tap the barrel for a grooved scope mount. I have the proper equipment and the competitence to do that. If I decide later that I want the challenge of open iron sights again, I can put them back on and only have one tiny 6-48 plug screw showing on top of the barrel. I'll post up a pic when I get the scope on it. Thank you all. RJ

Once you put the scope on you will have a different rifle.
Why not get a newer one with iron sights for when you get that itch again?

It's not really collecting, it's adopting. So, they can be cared for.
