Are the conversion parts for the 357 flattop blackhawks the same as the subsequent old models? If so, which calibers of the old models fit the 357 flattop?

I jumped on a 6 1/2" Flattop on gunbroker last night but its converted and need to start the process of finding the goodies to put her back as it should be.

Whats a fair price these days for the little plastic bag-o-gold? I remeber buying a whole bunch of boxes from a shop in Texas, and most of the newer one piece boxes had the parts bags under the corner flap--to have it to do all over again I wouldn't need to make this post.

Thanks,

Will

I think any Old Model parts for Blackhawks (not Supers) will work with the exception of the hammer, which must be from a .357 to fit properly . . . it's not quite as tall as some of the others. The proper base pin would be one without the collar, although you could actually retain the "conversion" base pin as it will work until you can find the proper one.

You guys correct me if I'm wrong here.

:)

So any of the old model parts, from either a flattop or later 3-screw, will work so long as they are out of a .357, correct?

What different calibers will parts from a .41 mag fit?

Thanks,

Will

Looking at Dougan's 1963-73 book, it appears that the same pieces fit all the large guns like the .30, the .41, and the .45. Triggers exhibit subtle differences in thickness and curvature over the years and models.

It would be desirable to get a trigger and hammer from the same gun, I suppose, as they have been "run in" together.

If you put a "want to buy" in the Classifieds, I'll bet you come up with a complete set before too long.

Depending on the variation of an old Flattop,, you may need a "skinny" trigger to be correct. And sets of parts are usually $100 & up.

Those original parts are most definitely a bargaining chip when buying or selling... My recent good deal on a 4 digit Flatgate was still a good deal but a bit of the shine went away when I had to spend $105 on a skinny trigger OM parts set for it...

The hammer you seek is dead center. Large frame hammer to the left. Look close and you can see the front nose is just a tad ~1/8" taller.

The rest of the parts are the same, with the small exception the lands and grooves & collars on the base pin have differences. All BP will/should fit and work correctly. Cylinder hand is a wee bit taller Lg frame vs med frame, but can be altered to operate correctly.

EDITOne really need's to have/ invest in a Homeboy Gunsmith book. Rugers are really quite simple, but it ALL needs to be within specs and work together. $35 and the detail covered is excellent. See link below.

Hawkeye, Super Blackhawk, LG Blackhawk, Med Blackhawk, Single Six, Super Single Six, Bearcat.

Ohhh I cannot take credit for the picture, (Not Mine) it has been posted on the forum long, long ago, it is a excellent reference and helped me to learn the differences along w/ the books.

Yours or not, thanks for posting. Very informative. Found my parts and should have it ready to return to original when the gun arrives.

Anyone know where theres a good link to the old model tear down? I found numerous ones for the new model, but not the old lockwork.

Thanks,

Will

Perty Simple, this should help.

Dont forget to capture the hammer spring with a small nail or a short piece of hanger wire.

Make sure you unload the bolt spring before pulling the bolt screw, it hooks into the side of the cylinder frame on the side, just a little push down w/ a small flat and move the little leg inward once free let up and away goes the tension without the spring goin-a-flyin.

I would recomend if your going to do a little homeboy gunsmithing to pick a copy of this up. You will learn way more than the $35. Covers NM & OM and everything in between.

IIRC, the hammer image is WMG's!

Yup, that was my pic but I don't have it on a server at the moment. My picturetrail account lapsed shortly after the credit card they were spanking for their annual fee expired.

I was using photobucket for free so figured why pay for picturetrail. Then I got an email from photobucket asking me to take a survey on why I closed my account... so it would seem that photobucket and picturetrail are now joined at the hip, or maybe they always have been.
