55 in May and I don't have a sharp sight picture anymore. That front sight is a bit hazy, no matter what I do. I've seen what amounts to a sort of express sight on some custom revolvers, a gold/brass bead that sits nestled into a wide "V" rear sight. Does anyone have any experience with this style, and does it help the old eyes get on target?

I hate the thought of having to go to a halo sight just to stay in the game! I do so like irons!

I have a brass bead on my FA 97, and it works great in bright sunlight (when the sun is behind you), but shooting from a covered line you might as well have a black sight. I've got other guns with fiber optics on them, and those work pretty good.

I'm 61 and have had Lasik to be able to do away with glasses for distance but I can tell you from experience it doesn't do much for arm's length focus. I have iron sights on everything except my 'yote rifle and refuse to give in to glass. I have learned to focus on the front sight exclusively and can do pretty well for an old guy.

Marlin sights seem to be the easiest to use on a rifle.

My "never miss" rifle is a S&W M&P1522 with GI type peep rear sight. You can't miss that huge front post looking thru the rear peep.

I'm there, too. At the age of 62 nothing under arms length can be focused anymore. My solution: as you should wear glasses on the shooting line anyway, I bought an assortment of Dollar-store reading glasses (with the large lenses) and use them to focus on the front sight. The target bullseye is blurred anyway even when you don't use glasses and concentrate on the front sight.

Works for me. And, eat a lot of carrots! Or have you ever seen a wabbit with glasses? :D

I'm 63 and have to use trifocal (varilux) lenses. The middle "focal" lense seems to work pretty good for shooting. I put on a large pair of plastic safety glasses over my regualar glasses for safety; this all works very good for shooting with standard iron sights out to 25 yards.

RobW's response also works well for many other older shooters as I understand it.

Im 65, tried all the above and being an archer settled on an instinctive method, kind of. I focus on the target and let the rear notch and front sight find their natural alignment/center. Just like shooting a peep sight in theory. Shrunk group size and could finally hit with my fixed sight Single Six. Flies in the face with everything I had been taught or ever read.

I lost the ability to see both ends of the gun better than 5 years ago. Optics on all long guns and either optics or Fire Sights on handguns. Well the Fire Sights have only worked on one revolver, but I took a deer with it. Fortunately shotguns don't need sights, just be able to see the target. Oh yeah, I turned 63 in January.

Age 67 -- No-line bifocals and HiVis sights work for me. When I bow hunt I leave my "specs" at home. I still use bowsights, but I shoot darn near instinctively. May try this with a handgun.

As my mother in law says, and I rarely agree with her, the old bat, but on this she is right on;

I'm 57 & have the same problem with my eyes seein the sights & so far it's iron sights only!

I don't have to use the viagra yet either, but my dentist wanted to give me some the last time I had a tooth pulled. I said what's that for? He mentioned that it would give me something to hold onto while yanking my tooth..... :lol: :lol:

I will be 56 at the end of the month. I used to think a scope on a handgun was stupid, now it makes a lot of sense. I use a red dot scope for one handed bullseye shooting. A peep sights on one's shooting glasses works pretty good for slow fire target shooting with iron sights. You can make one yourself by using a pin to put a small hole in a black piece of construction paper and taping the paper on your shooting glasses over your dominant eye. Several manufaturers make more refined peep sight eyeglass covers. For speed shooting events (e.g. IDPA) I have tried glasses with an inverted bifocal with some success, but prefer to use big, gaudy sights on the handgun. Accuracy is still good enough for something like IDPA.

You can order glasses with an inverted bifocal for pistol shooting here:

Here is another peep sight to attach to your glasses:
