Odd Blackhawk problem?

Howdy folks,

While at the gunshow this weekend, I was in the process of buying a NM. 44 flat top when I noticed the hammer would not turn the cylinder if the gun was held sideways (parallel to the ground). Hold it upright, no issues, turn it sidewys and the hammer cocked without spinning the cylinder. Too bad, I wanted the gun, but would prefer a working example.

Anyone seen this before? My guess was the slot in the frame for the pawl was too wide, causing it to slip off the hammer when held sideways. That or the lug it rides on the hammer was too short?

My guess is the pawl spring & plunger was stuck, missing or installed wrong. The hammer does not turn the cylinder, the pawl does, (which is connected to the hammer :wink: ) Sounds like a pawl engagement problem.

I like it when this stuff happens when trying to buy a gun... one can usually get a deal for a few dollar fix. :roll:
