Memphis has many fine dining restaurants, which I care little about, and some fine BBQ restaurants, which I do care about. But it appears to be the coming thing to open a home cookin' style restaurant or catfish place in one of the small towns close to Memphis. These small towns were once centers for agricultural need, with a post office, general store, feed store, and a cotton gin. Now restaurants are being opened, usually in an old abandoned building and decorated much like a Cracker Barrel, rustic and "old timey." They have names like "Vinegar Jim's, Slingshot Charlie's, and Braden Station."

Ate at Braden Station last night, about 35 miles out of Memphis. Catfish and seafood their forte. Also chocolate cobbler with soft serve ice cream on top. All-you-can eat buffet. This was an old general store, next to the railroad tracks. In fact, trains still stop here for lunch or supper. They differ from the Cracker Barrel in that they are home folks, not tourists lodged in a nearby motel. And real Southern cookin'. And usually with a country setting on a pond or lake, maybe even grazing cows nearby.

Makes for a nice evening.

Bob, you sure know good food! Sound like a good type of restaurant.

I bbq'ed last night myself. After two years of trying i think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Love BBQ! The best one we have is at a Truck Stop. Actually it's a McDonald's Truck Stop just eight miles from our house. All country driving though. The name is Baldy's BBQ and it's been there about five years now. I swear it just gets better over time. We know the owner and that makes it even better.

Our favorite for steaks and seafood is the Ranchero Supper Club. It's located out in the country in a very small town with only a few houses and a grain elevator. The food is most excellent!

Anybody get up this way and give us a call we might just join you. :D Well not a call, do a PM.

Sadly, I don't think we have any really good BBQ places here in NE Ohio. Steaks I rarely order out because I like to do my own. I do agree though, am seeing a growth in restaurants just out of the city, sorta. Here though, the trend is wineries. Must 20 now just in 'Bula County. Hundleys was the new one we visited last eve..

I travel to Memphis on a semi- regular basis, and try to get by the Rendezvous whenever I can. I'm amazed at the number of people that review the place and say the ribs aren't tender enough. I guess they want baby food. Charcoal ribs served dry is the style I try to emulate at home. Gotta have bark!

Bob Wright, got any other recommendations?

Prefer wet ribs, myself. Ribs and watermelon are two foods that are just plain messy to eat.

Corky's and Three Little Pigs are my choice for ribs.
