Memphis has many fine dining restaurants, which I care little about, and some fine BBQ restaurants, which I do care about. But it appears to be the coming thing to open a home cookin' style restaurant or catfish place in one of the small towns close to Memphis. These small towns were once centers for agricultural need, with a post office, general store, feed store, and a cotton gin. Now restaurants are being opened, usually in an old abandoned building and decorated much like a Cracker Barrel, rustic and "old timey." They have names like "Vinegar Jim's, Slingshot Charlie's, and Braden Station."
Ate at Braden Station last night, about 35 miles out of Memphis. Catfish and seafood their forte. Also chocolate cobbler with soft serve ice cream on top. All-you-can eat buffet. This was an old general store, next to the railroad tracks. In fact, trains still stop here for lunch or supper. They differ from the Cracker Barrel in that they are home folks, not tourists lodged in a nearby motel. And real Southern cookin'. And usually with a country setting on a pond or lake, maybe even grazing cows nearby.
Makes for a nice evening.
