Only 41 Mag Smith I have is a 6 inch 57. Really wanted a 4 inch but the deal was ok.

Thank you, it took a while to find this one.
I too have a couple of 57's and a 657, but the 58 is a rarer bird, especially these early S-series. Got a surprisingly reasonable deal on it, too.

4" because of appearance or for carry?

A lot of people like the 4" barrel version. I assume one reason for this is because of the aesthetics - the length of barrel compared to frame compared to the grip. It is definitely well proportioned.
