That's a very nice, healthy looking deer and a beautiful rifle too. Congratulations!

The best part of the morning -- after shooting him I just sat back and kept watching for a while. About 10 minutes after he went down a second buck big enough to be his Grandaddy ran across the field. He stopped at the fenceline and I could easily have dropped him at about 150 yards, but the thought of field-dressing, hauling, cutting, wrapping and freezing two big 'uns in a day was enough to make me pass. (Like I say, I've been doing this 50 years.) He'll still be there later this week, and I am the sole hunter on the place...

Good on you for hunting with a single shot rifle. My Ruger No. 1 has been my go to deer rifle since 1975. When hunting in thick cover, my old model Super Blackhawk revolver does the trick.
I would be interested in a comparison of you Brown 97D to a Ruger No. 1.

The 97D action was first used for a single-shot pistol, then adapted for use in the rifle. They are more than sufficiently strong for Brown's proprietary cartridges, like the 6.5 BRM, which is essentially a blown-out .30-30 case necked down to 6.5 mm. 140 gr. bullet at 2500 fps from the 24" barrel, and it's overall just about exactly the size and weight of a scoped .30-30 carbine. The load I am using now will reliably put 5 shots in to under an inch at 100 yards, and is a legitimate 300 yard deer cartridge.

:roll: Well, I got a squirrel today that was robbing my bird feeder. Used my .177 RUGER spring loaded pellet rifle with a scope; dropped him with a single shot at about 10 yards. Not a deer, but the best I could do in my back yard. :roll: :roll:

Ok,,, NOW that you shared,,, I was mostly curious due to the size & all. Especially since you mentioned a bigger one as well. But I couldn't resist a bit of an "overtone" in my responses.
It used to be that not many bigger bucks came out of the upstate,, as compared to the midlands. That has been changing quite nicely!

This buck, by a small margin, is the biggest I have shot here in 25 years. And, as already stated, there's a bigger one on the same property! I have to wonder if, in a way, this recent trend of bigger deer isn't one sign of the intense coyote predation of the past decade. Although numbers are fewer, the size of both bucks and does seems to be increasing. I have no facts and figures to back this up, just personal observation, but the ones I've shot lately have been bigger than typically seen in years past and generally in prime condition.
So maybe the coyote invasion has a good side -- but I still shoot the buggers on sight. In fact, got one this evening but left the camera at home. Just as well -- it would have been a pretty gory picture.

Coyotes are definitely a problem. And your buck is a nice one for the upstate. One other thing that has contributed to larger deer is the sanctuary property. Developments, private gated communities etc. It allows deer as well as other animals to grow longer & bigger. Just my observations.
Now,,, I hope to see pics of that bigger buck,,, and keep on killing the coyotes.
