In my tenth day of fevers between 99 and 102.6. Fever is up and down but never goes back to normal. Coughing, but no real production to the cough. The cough is very forceful but basically dry. Headches and no energy. Went to the doctor Wednesday and she said it will have to run its course. Tested negative for the flu A or B but the doctor said it is a flu like virus.. I can't sleep at night because of the cough and this persistant fever makes me feel horrible. My normal body temp is around 97.5 or so. Over the counter meds don't really help. Anybody else dealing with this, or maybe a family member? I've never had a cold or flu virus hit me like this and for so long. I might be on my way back to the doctor tomorrow. I'm just wondering how long it has taken to bounce back from this if anyone has had it.

Yep, I think I've got the same thing.... started last Monday night.... hurt all over... felt pretty bad on tuesday then not that bad on Wednesday and went back to work.... and again on Thursday but cut that day short and now have felt poorly since then....nights are the worse. Now the coughs have gotten wet.... and there is some congestion.

I went through exactly the same thing about a month ago. Took about a week and a half before I started to feel human again.... when the cough starts to loosen up, it's a sign that things are gonna get better soon.

That sir describes pneumonia to a "T". I am amazed that antivirals weren't prescribed. Take 5 deep breaths, as deep as you can get them, every hour that you are awake. This pumps the lymph system, which is your immune system. Good luck!

To the OP. I had the same thing back just before New Years. Same temps, dry cough until a week and a half later and stuck to the couch for days. Fever then chills, the whole thing lasted 12 days and I was weak for another week after that. Non-flu or some virus I'm told. Plenty of water, some food but I still lost 7 pounds. I hope you get over it soon, I know I was miserable and missed sever days of work.

Thanks everybody. I am lucky in that I retired at a young age(53). So no work issues. I'm just tired and this cough is wearing me out. I feel like if I could beat the fever I would feel better but no luck so far. I guess 10 days is not uncommon. I have been lucky in my life and have been blessed with good general health and I've never had anything like this before. Even the flu wasn't as bad.

Join the club! I had it shortly after SHOT. Then my stepson got it, followed by my DIL & granddaughter. Finally Miss Penny got it & the last one in the family has been my son. The ones of us that went to a doctor,,, all said exactly what your doc said. Only in one case did a doctor prescribe antibiotics. When I went to my pharmacist, she told me to get plain Musinex, (sp) and benadryl, (sp) with plenty of water. It allowed me to sleep, and it helped with the coughing. It has taken all of us 3-5 weeks to whip it. My DIL has had it the worst so far & is still fighting,, and my son is on the upswing. Miss Penny is close to being over it.
We feel for you!

Honey, thin sliced ginger and lemon slices in a jar together, grind up a small bit of OSHA root and a small amount of Golden Seal and ground Echinacea and add to the concoction. This stuff works pretty good. I use 108 proof Wild Turkey, with hot lemonade or green tea and honey for the cough.
Be careful about taking Aspirin if it is viral in nature

Gramps; I was thinking the same thing about it being pneumonia; had that during Basic in the army while Double timing to the rifle range, run, stop, WHEEZE, WHEEZE, Wheeze, run a few more steps stop Wheeze, wheeze wheeze; finally went on sick call one morning (Yeah all the BS from the DI) the medics loaded me onto an ambulance and down to the hospital, couple of X-rays and the doc comes in says , "you've got Pneumonia, go out the door, turn left and then right at the third hallway and continue to ward # 10, the Isolation ward." Got out a week later after multiple doses of Tetracycline and "lung-breath therapy".

This advice ranks among the best ever posted here. gramps has offered this from time to time over the years. It takes a while to establish the habit, but it truly does benefit the body and overall health and wellness. Get well soon.

Everyone in the state of florida,NY,Vermont as far as I know, got it from the WITCH, she had it on and off for 3 weeks and finally
got it but good. She didn't need DRS,cough meds, she hacked day and night,I got it the third week,2nd day EXPECTORANT 7 hours later cough started to slo a bit,end of 2nd day 75% was gone,no strength, appetite nil.
One of the biggest votes in our history coming up everyones sick.

Always get my flu shot. Dr said I can't afford get the flu, so I got the flu that ain't the flu! Dang it! I'd rather have the flu. It doesn't last near as long as the flu that ain't the flu. 5 weeks and counting!

Looks like you guys gave me your sickness. Took the day off of work to attend my Sons swearing in as a police officer and then visit the other Son, DIL and Grandkids, but instead I am stuck at home. Feel like I have been run over by a train. :( :(

Well getting the flu shot doesn't stop the flu! The vaccine is a trivalent(3 different strains), when there may be up to 10 strains circulating. Some years the flu shot only covers one of the 10 circulating strains.

13th day!!!!! Felt a little better during the day yesterday but last night was pretty rough. Vicious cough that refused to let me sleep. The doc prescribed antibiotics and said give them 48 hours. Not much success yet. Been 48 hours on those. Rest and sleep is said to very important but I use a CPAP machine and I just can't sleep with the mask on. Fever still hanging in there but running a little lower. 99 to 100 range. I haven't hit 101 in a couple days. This bug or whatever it is is kicking my tail. For those of you like minded I would appreciate your prayers. Also for the others out there dealing with the same thing!!!! Knowing how rough this is makes me so thankful that it's me dealing with it instead of my family. I know there are many whose suffering makes mine seem like the sniffle's. :)

AND I ALWAYS GET THE FLU after having the shot; Got to know the medics in my local unit when I was in the Army; Them "flu "SHOTS" never hurt a bit after that. (LOL)

I DID finally give in and get the Pneumonia vacination; I figured that with my slight COPD it was a worthwhile protection.
PS: When I go grocery shopping, the first thing I grab inside the door is one of those Sanitary wipes and use it on the handle and close areas of the shopping cart. NO TELLING what germs them Que tip head snowbirds hauled down South with them !!

Pamela....I always thought my Mom was NUTS for coming home from the store and washing off canned goods, mayo jars, ketchup bottles, milk bottles, etc in addition to fruits and veggies. She always said you don't know who handeled it in the store before you bring it home.

Never know if an employee stocking the shelves or a customer handling the goods had germy hands, she was right and Mom NEVER EVER got the flu or colds. Wash your hands after handling money and before eating.....money is very very dirty.

It sounds kind of nuts, but I learned well and still follow her advice. She taught us well.

For 15 years I never got the flu shot and never ever got the flu or a cold. Then when I began caregiving for Mom I got the flu shot 4 years in a row....got the flu within 5-7 days after the shot.....4 years in a row. Never got a flu shot after Mom was gone...never again got the flu.

Everybody be safe and be well.
