Seems there's more and more knock-offs with Ruger's eagle on them appearing - especially on eBay. Some are getting bids and rices as thought they're actually something factory and/or rare. How many people are really interested in the fakes? Crazy to think some are buying thinking they're getting something real and then discover later they got duped.

Yes...is one of those things.
I can think of quite a few things that go for big $ because it's got a logo or somebody's face on it, even though its not factory authorized or endorsed by the individual. All the Dale Earnhart plaques and whatever else that are out there is an example...pictures in frames, pictures on this or that. Its nuts!

Give us an example what set you off ?,,,, We all know about fake patches, decals, etc.

A while back there was a fixed blade knife on ebay, it has a 5 3/4" blade and is 10 1/4" OAL, with RUGER etched on the blade, a dark green laminated wood handle with the Ruger emblem with a red back ground. There were no other marks on the knife and there was not a lot of interest in it.

I bought the knife and when it came I was amazed at how well made it was, the Ruger emblem is CUT into the wood and it has the Ruger Trademark logo, the etching on the full length blade is very professional and it is sharp as a razor. What really gets everyone's attention is that the knife is as light as a feather, could it be part Titanium?? a couple of big Case dealers at the Gun Show think its a good possibility.

This knife came out of the estate of Brandon Hatcher, who was a design consultant for Buck Knives,,Ruger prototype??? we will never know that answer but I do know that this isn't some cheaply made knock off and makes a great conversation piece. "Just Ruger Lore" or as Rugerguy say's another episode of "As the Cylinder Turns"

If it's not your money and no one is crying that they got took why would you or anyone else care? It's their money let them spend it.
Just my thoughts Dave and you don't have to agree with them anymore than I with yours.

Good Hunting,
Terry

As noted, sometimes a prototype item gets shown to the folks at Ruger & are not accepted for licensed sale. It has gone on almost since Bill started. I own a prototype patch like that that came from Bills estate.
Also, some items are licensed by Ruger, but are not sold by Ruger. I have seen two vendors at SHOT displaying their wares & such, and they do have the agreement to sell these items. But they did not come from the factory. I have also seen obvious counterfeit items as well, especially on sleezbay. I have bought a few things knowing they were fake, but they were cheap enough to where I decided to get them to SHOW what counterfeit items look like.
As always, buyer beware.

No one item in particular I guess. But when you see an item on say eBay and it's just way too clean for what it's vintage would be and the same seller has a bunch of other items - same item just different logo… Not rocket science to see what's happening there.
Seen the supposed "prototype" stuff and in some cases I'm sue the story behind them is valid. Other times, the story just doesn't make sense.

OK,,I thought it might have been those Ruger Brass with Black Leather Coasters. Don't know if they have tie's to Ruger or not but they are 1st Class all the way and would look good in my curio fake or not.

Don't know the story on them, I came in second but,,,,,I think we will see them pictured again!

with some of the
"computer generated" cutters (plasma even) and etching as well as embroidery machines, one can simulate, 'copy' ,generate whatever logo ,design, pattern in ANY item, of ANY material...as noted above when you "see" the same items, but with a different logo, it is indeed "obvious" and as the old Ruger patches and buckles of years gone by that were done in the Philippines as one example, this goes on and on....as Chet says, YOU see an emblem or logo that catches YOUR eye, you jump on it, and can always "pass it off" as a "prototype"......yes, as I often say just another bit of Ruger lore, and "As the Cylinder Turns" so goes the days of your lives in Ruger collecting land........

or call it "capitalism in its finest hour....." anon 8)

.........caveat emptor baby

AGREE. Seems to be on a parallel with the Ebay seller of Colt boxes and related out of Tenn. Some 30+ years ago, WBR had Senior Staff hunting down these unauthorized sellers and prosecuting them if they did not cease and desist the proliferation of such goods..........

Well my thoughts are if nobody was buying this stuff they wouldn't be making it.....

The FAKE BOX GUY is a daily post on the COLT FORUM.....and yet people pay stupid money for the FAKED NIB Python's on GB.....even though with just a small amount of research one can easily determine the box is FAKE.....

I wish he would get into RUGER BOXES so I could afford/find a 10" 357 FT BOX

Maybe get a half dozen GREEN WREATH's while I am at it    RR....

Regarding the presence or absence of the little "circled R" trademark indication . . . if you're making a good counterfeit, you do ALL of it.

;)

So noted Sir,,,still the buyers money! and none of our business what they buy or pay.

Now if the miscreant was trying to pawn it off on the Ruger Forum,,,,,well then that would be a different matter eh Ale??

I fell right into your little trap eh!

No trap, no subterfuge, no evil intent. Just observing that a good fake can be hard to spot.

And for those not intimately familiar with stuff, it's easy to get stung.

As you say, if you're happy with a purchase, it's surely none of my bidness.

I have been criticized in the past for questioning some stuff we have seen advertised here, so I try to avoid that now. If moderators don't care why should I? Not my money.

And Rod's right . . . without a ready market the stuff wouldn't be available.

All JMHO.

:)

Here is a good example,

Go over in the Auctions section and look at Tellico's post,,,, just a factory boo boo, with someone trying to get over MO. I would hope that the average Ruger owner would not fall for it. But again their money!!

Now lets look at this offering on ebay,,note that the owner posts it is NOT FACTORY!!
My opinion very tastefully done and if someone thought like wise and they paid x amount of money,,good for them!!!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181323396538?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Mods} I used the above post for an example in this post, if need be please remove it.

Heck I think the factory BOO BOO isn't out of line if you are into such things.....heck there are several others close to $100 that are nothing special and are not the whole package....I wouldn't mind owning the BOO BOO cylinder but will pass this time....why would anyone care how someone else spends their money....I hope I run out of CA$$$H the day before I DIE    that way I can get the state to pay to bury me    YMMV....RR

I've heard that the ideal situation is to have your check to the undertaker BOUNCE!

No, I don't plan to pre-pay.

Just my two cents by I can say with certainty that there are many, many items that were manufactured/requested by the factory as samples that for one reason or another were not produced beyond the original, examples but are legitimate Ruger collectibles, in my mind, they are Ruger items...I also know that Ruger has had many very limited special items made to give as gifts to friends, distributor principles, etc. I have a few examples of such items including many 50th anniversary items that were one offs etc. I also know of 50 black leather SXS hand guards made as a special gifts and never available to the public...

Some items that show up are real...but how will we know? Does there have to be common knowledge, must they be shown on the website or in a catalog etc....I have items that I know the provenance of....maybe I need to ask WBR Jr for letters of authenticity, but to me, that would be classless and possibly, offensive....

I too have times that while undoubtedly "real" have no way of proving or having any provenance other than the method of how I acquired them (former long time employee). Some are just obvious though. It's all in what story is believable and what else surround it and the seller.

I agree 100%, Here's an example, I was the only bid for the whopping price of 29.95 + 4.75 shipping. Just an interesting item to me alone.
