Long overdue is a listing of Number 1 rifles with non-prefix serial numbers. I've been thinking about doing this for a while. Lets see how many of these we can get documented in order to fully grasp the rarity of some of the model configurations/calibers that were produced (there currently 821 listed). I truly believe the Number 1 with non-prefix serial number is severely under-appreciated!! Decent condition non prefix guns in a common caliber/configuration can still be purchased for $1,200 to $1,400. Price on a new Number 1 Rifle today is well over $2K, so the non-prefix guns represent rare collectibility with serial numbers going only to 8437. Not only that, the 1967 to 1969 era Number One was the only model that Ruger has ever offered that could truly be produced how you wanted it… caliber, forearm style (beavertail or Alex Henry) or with Sights, without sights or with Target Blocks, with at least 90 model/caliber configurations known over those 8,437 guns!! Custom ordering was only available until 1969/1970 when Ruger standardized the Number 1 with several different individual models.

First, a tutorial on what the model abbreviations signify from the collector perspective…
AB = 22” Lightweight barrel, Beavertail forearm and without sights. (Be sure to measure barrel length from the front of the barrel to the breech block as there are some 24” and 25” Lightweight barrels).
AH = 22” Lightweight barrel, Alex Henry forearm, without sights
ABS = 22” Lightweight barrel, Beavertail forearm, with Open Sights
AHS = 22” Lightweight barrel, Alex Henry forearm, with Open Sights

BB = 26” medium weight barrel, Beavertail forearm, without sights (Again, be sure to measure barrel length as there are at least two known with 24” medium weight barrels).
BH = 26” medium weight barrel, Alex Henry forearm, without sights
BBS = 26” medium weight barrel, Beavertail forearm, with Open Sights
BHS = 26” medium weight barrel, Alex Henry forearm, with Open Sights

BBB = 26” medium weight barrel, Beavertail forearm, Target Blocks (again, be sure to measure the barrel length from the front of the barrel to the breech block. The original Varmint barrel was 26” with a Sporter style crown. The 1-V was standardized to 24” and has a target crown)
BHB = 26” medium weight barrel, Alex Henry Forearm, Target Blocks

1970 Standardized models (some late shipped non-prefix guns will letter as these model designations)
1A = 22” Light weight barrel with Alex Henry forearm and Open Sights
1B = 26” Medium weight barrel with beavertail forearm, without sights
1S = 26” Medium weight barrel with Alex Henry forearm and with Open Sights
1H = 24” Heavy weight barrel with Alex Henry forearm and with Open Sights
1V = 24” “C” weight barrel with Target Blocks and Target Crown.

The early prototypes
X1 AH 7mm Mag., with two scope blocks on barrel (different than regular production) in lieu of quarter rib. Wider than normal barrel band, two point checkering pattern at wrist. This gun is noted on “24Hourcampfire.com”
X3 AHS .22-250 (pictured in Ruger's 1967-1968 advertising for the S22L model)
X4 BB .243 with checkered steel grip cap and hollow smooth-face recoil pad. 2-line eagle logo barrel address without “INC.” as was used on Old Model Super Blackhawks and Magnum marked Single-Sixes.
X5 BBB .243 with checkered steel grip cap and hollow smooth-face recoil pad. 2-line eagle logo barrel address without “INC.” as was used on Old Model Super Blackhawks and Magnum marked Single-Sixes.
X7 1H .458 with “S” marked safety, checkered steel grip cap and hollow smooth-face recoil pad and experimental folding leafe “express” style rear sight mounted on a 7” quarter rib. Grooved front sight base. 2-line eagle logo barrel address without “INC.” as was used on Old Model Super Blackhawks and Magnum marked Single-Sixes.
At least two other early prototypes produced (are these X2 and X6?), an S26M in .30-06 used by Roger Barlow for at least a Spring 1966 bear hunt and a .270 (unknown model) used by WBR and Ted Trueblood on at least a Fall 1965 hunt.

The SN listing. We are documenting model configuration, barrel length if different than the standard 22” Light weight barrel or 26” Medium weight barrel, front sight bases if they are grooved for a hood, forearm checkering whether it is early checkering (3 panel beavertail or wraparound Alex Henry) vs. later 2 panel checkering (Beavertail or Alex Henry) or “S” marked safety (these were produced by errantly using the rollmark that was meant for the rollmark normally used for the M77).

At the end of the listing I have also included serial numbers for several uncataloged models for the 130- prefix in .222 and 6.5 Rem Mag. as well as the ultra rare 1B 7x57 and 1H 45-70 Liberty marked variation.

Be aware that there may also be caliber marking differences to be discovered, i.e. “.45-70” to “.45-70 GOVT.” or “.22-250” to “.22-250 Rem.” I recently found the .22-250 change and believe the change was made after they went to the 130- prefix just like the .45-70, but there may be some non-prefix guns with different style caliber markings.

130-02691 Old style sn (the “0” in the prefix is noticeably larger than the first zero of the five digit prefix and the left side of the dash is right up against the zero). More study on this to come, but it appears Ruger marked the prefix of these early rifles with a solid “130-” stamp (the characters of the “130-” are NOT on individual wheels in the serial numbering head)

@chet15 Have you seen any No 1's with extra engraving on the stock and fore end?
1767801575695.png
