Saw this on the news this afternoon. Seems he has a REALLY long commute. "Daniel Konzelman, 24, was headed south on Interstate 95 in Pierce County, Washington, with his girlfriend Alicia on Monday morning when he saw an Amtrak passenger train speed by." Not too sure when they diverted it to the West coast but Interstate 95 used to run right by my home here in Maryland. I realize that it was actually Interstate 5 but you would think that someone would proofread before posting or printing.

I see it all the time in the tags they scroll at the bottom of the screen or in a banner behind the news person. It is so glaringly wrong I can't believe it got by anyone at the news station.

If you write about something you know little if anything about, or don't really understand....

The train crashed down onto I-5 in my town of Dupont, WA.

Was your news reader someone who regularly reports on the real I-95? Might be easy to say I-95 when you are used to saying it and I-5 is "foreign" to you.

It was a national news agency. Don't remember exactly where I saw it and am not going back looking for it. Bottom line is most should know, or find out for sure, before reporting where it actually occurred.

More and more, I often see misspelled words in online news stories. People might be in a hurry to get the news out first, who knows...

I might have easily skipped over the I-95 and read I-5. My 1st thought was what did his girlfriend, Alicia, look like :)

I see this all the time, they forget suffixes, poor spelling, the usual "you're, your, etc' and sometimes whoever wrote the piece obviously doesn't follow any rules of the English language. I blame it on education and text- talk.

At one time back in my very early life, I was fascinated with newspapers, journalism, etc etc. So much so I was going to be a reporter. Well, that didn't work out when I found out how corrupt journalism is. But proofreaders were a HUGE asset to newspapers. Especially in the days of typewriters! It was a VERY rare thing that you'd ever see a typo or factual mistake (such as I-95 instead of I-5).

That all changed with word processors, although there still were proofreaders for newspapers since it was still a costly endeavor to make up the presses, and printing errors costs lots of money and late papers!

As the print media has gone away, so has the position of "Proofreader". Now we have 'autocorrect'.

And we're seeing how that works! I see horrible mistakes in many stories. And unfortunately, poor writing, grammar and spelling (to me) gives me no confidence in a piece that would otherwise seem quite credible. I see it all the time in the so called 'patriot movement'.

I-95 in Pierce County, Washington, eh ? I thought it ran close to me here in Central NJ-perhaps they renamed it. Like they renumbered all the exits on a few years ago, or renumbered the exists on the PA Turnpike.
Did I ever tell you about my Ruger Super Blackhawk in 41 Magnum ? It was made in 1960.

I gave up on the Media editing years ago. When I was in the Navy back in the
'5os' I used to hitch hike home on I-95. No wonder it took me so long to get home!!!

The nearest daily newspaper to us has gotten so bad, I try hard not to read it. That is, unless I'm having a bad day and need a good laugh. Most of the writers for the rag can neither spell nor punctuate properly. I realize mine leaves a lot to be desired, but I didn't major in Journalism or English either. Disclaimer: I didn't finish college either...lol. I am a Senior in Psychology at the ripe old age of 58 and will never finish!

LOL...thanks for the encouragement Sir! I actually restarted my college career after the end of a 30 yr. career in the oilfield because of back issues, surgeries, etc. After going back part-time for a couple of years, I had a heart attack/by-pass surgery that really took the wind out of my sails for a little while and just haven't gone back. Thanks Mr. Paul and have a blessed day-Eddie

For those interested in proofreading, I recommend the book. Between you and me: Confessions of a comma Queen.
By Mary Norris.
It's a glimpse into a different world.
