NMV pawl lump

What is the "function" of the "lump" on the bottom of the pawl of a NMV?
Every one I have seen seems to dig, uncontrollably into the grip frame, forming a small amount of distortion in the original metal next to the grove that was cut at the factory. If the lump and the groove are supposed to be compatible, why the severe distortion on the grip frame?

While I do not have any of the guns in question,, (I only have 2 New Vaqueros, and neither have the latest feature) I suspect you are asking about the "free spin" portion of the pawl. If I am correct,,, that "lump" is there to allow the free spinning of forward or reverse of the cylinder when loading.

Do you have a picture of what you are referring to? I have fiddled with a few of these and can't think of where there is a lump.

Contender is correct.

The 'leg' or extension on the bottom of the cyl pawl works in conjunction with the angled slot above the trigger guard on the top surface of the grip frame to cam the pawl back out of reach of the cyl ratchet teeth so the cyl can turn backwards as in free spinning.

The 'distortion' you refer to, is not. It's just a normal contact 'footprint' the same as any two parts that contact each other in normal operation. It will not be a problem or get worse.
