NM Couple got close up to a Brown Bear.

Lucky for them- Mr Griz was in a very good mood that day and must have had a full belly of salmon.

I hope their guide had a 12 gauge at the ready- in case Mr Griz got tired of his visitors.

Animals are NOT created by Disney. These folks were lucky. Invading an animals space,,, no matter the animal,,, can put the animal on the offense. Bears just happen to be bigger & more capable of hurting us. They make zoom lenses for cameras,,, USE them!

Absolutely correct. Even "domesticated" animals/livestock have a comfort zone unless they've had special treatment.

Now there's a couple of tree hugging brain dead liberals if I ever saw one. Did you catch that little smile his wife gave

Yeah, that guy was so stupid, he didn't even know enough to crap his pants during that charge.

Hold a camera on the bear charging you...yeah, a brilliant idea.

If a bear attacks you, play dead. It will be good practice for when you die a minute later.

At that point he was committed. He sure wasnt going to outrun him.

<sarcasm>The bear didn't really want to hurt them. He was just coming to say hi then go about his business. Beats aren't inherently violent. </sarcasm>

They only get that way when provoked. Like taking a close encounter tour. :O

Blaming these people is wrong IMO. I've been to Katmai , on the same stretch. It is prime viewing with nearly no bad encounters. When you land, the warden warns you, and instructs you how to behave . As an example if you are fishing and hook up and a bear sees it, you are instructed to cut the line.. the bears know there is a meal on the end of the pole. I had a similar encounter as the video. We we fishing and a bear started working toward us but on the opposite side. As instructed we gave the bear a wide berth and backed away from the stream/river to a nearby gravel road. . However this bear, one about the same size as the video (young) decide to cross to our side , came galloping down the road directly toward us. It was not a charge. When it saw us it skidded to a stop, about 5 feet away, reversed direction and fled. We did everything right yet still had a close encounter. Thrilling to say the least. When you go to the "wilderness" there are worthwhile risks IMO

Contender,
I don't think a zoom lens would have helped here. This bear was protecting his
territory. These people were fortunate, If the bear had been hungrier, who knows?
And, if the people had tried to run? They did the best they could. Stood still and
no eye contact.

I believe even Jesus would have looked at him and said, "You're a special kind of stupid, ain't ya?"

I get what you're saying. But where i think they are crazy is signing up to go look for an intentional close encounter. I know in the wilderness an encounter is a very real possibility but I cannot think of a reason I'd go looking for one. Ha

The Katmai bears are used to close human encounters. When I was there in 1983 there was no fencing or a viewing platform which were installed because of a few attacks. We walked the same path the bears did to get to the falls & the salmon. I suspect the abundance of food and the frequency of human encounter greatly lessens the risk

Golferboy is absolutely correct about Katmai. It is designed for viewing bears, and mostly is done when the fish are running. Bears that are full of fish, and they eat till their heart is content reduces problems with bear/human involvement.

FWIW my take on the video is we didn't see the beginning of what was going on. I'm GUESSING that a bigger bear was coming down to the river and the younger (juvenile) bear got scared and ran, (unfortunately toward the people). You will see the bear looks over both of his shoulders while running, and then runs into people who are in a big group (bigger than the two that made the news) and that alone is a big deterrent to bear interaction. They are still going to be curious, but people handled themselves relatively well, and that helped. If someone had broke out and ran, there would have been a real issue. I suspect there was also a "guard" with them with a shotgun.
