Nickel Single six

Help Support Ruger Forum:

Hi IMO your not missing anything it most likely needed a refinish at some point and the owner thought wouldnt this look cool with a nickel finish I bet the seller was happy

That's a really nice looking gun. The scratching on the grip frame is a real turn off for me. I like the stags. It reminds me of the cap gun I had as a kid.

I like nickeled six guns, but not for the kind of money that that one sold for. And besides, the way it was done-up...like 'sketter' said, it looks like a cap gun.

Different strokes I guess.

Yeah, I don't normally like "silver" guns, but I could make an exception for that one. And you could probably get the grip frame refinished.

NIce work.

It's a long shot but Ruger had a circle display of plated Single-Sixs back in the 1950s. Might be worth a shot to get a letter from Ruger and see if it was plated by the factory. Probably not but might be worth it.

I was about to say that all you'd need to do is run the bottom of the grip frame over a few polishing stones and that annoying scratching would be gone. Then I realized that the nickle would almost certainly be gone, too!

Reminds me a bit of childhood cap guns as well. 8)

I just couldn't believe the price he got. I like the gun and would love to own it but I would have stopped bidding at half that price. Unless it letters(pretty sure it won't) I just can't see getting in that deep with little hope of return. I get every gun has pucker factor generally for me that means. I gave all the money but it will someday have a value grater than what I paid. Just gonna have to hold on to it longer.

Yeah, kinda pricey, but some of us don't really consider guns as an "investment". I'll bet that if I tried I could get more for most of my Old Model stuff than I paid for it, but I'd also doubt that I'd earn enough to make up for inflation since the time of purchase.

Something like that shiny bauble under discussion here is a thing to pass on to a grandchild. It's quite unique, and a show-stopper when playing show-and-tell.

JMHO, of course.

I feel the same way about nickel plated SA revolvers. Better on a cap pistol than a real revolver. BUT that is just the way I see it. Others may disagree. 8)

I owned a almost identical one except mine had the Ruger monograms in the grips. I bought mine used. I got a generic letter from Ruger saying they never nickeled a gun. Mine was one of the first round gates too. The hammer spur on mine was non checked, smooth for fast draw? A close friend that used to do the fast draw thing at Big Bear told me he seen a identical one to mine given as a prize. I wish I had kept mine! I bought mine at "The Gunshop" from Jack First in Lancaster California about 1972?? They also figured it had to had been refinished too as they weren't listed.

Ok so here is a silly question. How much would it cost to have a gun plated? Silly question number 2 can they plate the aluminum grip frame? The one referenced above on gb. The frame looks to be a different color. Like maybe its just polished.

They may have never nickeled a gun but they did have a slew of them CHROMED, as Srteet mentioned.
That's another example of Ruger not knowing what they are talking about when they reply about their history. On page 28 of Chad's Reference of Ruger Firearms, Chads talks about the Factory Seconds Single Sixes in the 380,000 to 451XXX serial number range. A lot of the guns in this range had cherry red frames which is probably why they were seconds. He also states "MANY WERE NICKEL PLATED".
