hi to all, i have a ruger sr9. i bought it right after the trigger recall so mine had already received the new trigger from the factory. i put mepro night sites on it and an ultimate ghost trigger in it. it has performed flawlessly for sometime now, but the last 2 times i have went to the range it will jam up. the slide either catches the spent shell when it is ejecting or will not slide forward all the way when loading the shell. i had been using nato 9mm shells but had went to Winchester hollow points after that. when i started using federal is when this happened. i have since tried several other rounds and still same problem. i have been told that the spring may be getting weak so my question would be should i try a new spring (which i will be ordering a ss guide rod and a few other mods for it in 2 weeks) which resistance should i get (15,18 etc) and maybe a recommendation for a good ammunition to put through it since i want to save my nato rounds. ammo i like would be able to pretty much make a mess of what ever i need to put a round into. face it if we intend to shoot to protect then we are obviously not wanting said object to get up lol. thank you for any and all input

Welcome to the Forum.

You have more than one magazine to try?

yea, same problem. this gun was awesome when i first got it but now jam after jam. i am going to try a few other things before march, if it is not fixed by then ill take it to the gun show and see what i can get for it. i hope it is fixed by then i love this gun.

Check your extractor, it should have a good amount of spring tension on it. Also inspect the hook on the extractor, it may be chipped or broken. A worn recoil spring doesn't stop a round from extracting from the gun.

ok, i had it apart the other day and all looked fine ill check it again may have over looked something. if i cant find anything i am going to take it to a gun smith and have him look it over, if it stumps him which i think it wont (hes awesome, know all over here for his work) ill get rid of it and try a new one. any good tips on ammo. cheaper the better but i have not found one im happy with other than nato rounds. if it costs i dont mind when it comes to accuracy and stopping power. thanks again

Way back in late 1999, I bought a Ruger 944 in .40 caliber. It jammed right out of the box. I tried 6 different magazines and almost a dozen different types of ammo but no luck. The shop sent it back to Ruger, I received it two weeks later (they changed the extractor and did some grinding work) and it shot great and somehow was more accurate. I kept it and it became one of my favorites.

I fired it at several in door ranges and one out door range. After putting 250 rounds through it with no change, I sent it back. None of my other Rugers had the same problem. I was told that Ruger had to make some changes to the 944 because other people had the same problem. I found metal filings in the gun when I got it back. I didn't get them all as they caused problems with the firing pin. The dealer cleaned it thoroughly and it never had a problem again.

my SR9 with a Ghost Rocket trigger bar was perfectly reliable and a great pistol to shoot. If yours is acting up it would be worth sending to Ruger. Give them a call and mostly likely they'll email or mail you a UPS shipping label to return it to them. Ruger is very good at taking care of customers and will correct whatever is wrong with the gun.
