New SP101 Problems ?

I just came home with a new 101. It looks good but I noticed a couple of things. First the cylinder gap is 0.00 on 4 cylinders and about .02 on the other (of course that’s the one I saw in the LGS.) After close examination of the cylinder I notice those four chambers have burs on them. I have the tools to remove the burs (very fine diamond stone and / or Foredoom tool with polishing head).

Also when the cylinder is open there is a lot of end play and it hits the end of the cylinder on the frame. See Pic.

So my questions.- should I remove the burs on each chamber or send it back.? Is the cylinder hitting the frame when opened normal?

If the burs were the only obstruction that was causing the cylinder to have 0 gap i would try to gently smooth them out. The cylinder hitting on frame is normal my SP101-357 and SP101-22 both hit there, the ejector rod doesn't retain the cylinder on the SP101 like it does on the GP100. The Sp101 is a great little revolver it should give you years of trouble free service.

Are you measuring correctly? .000" Bbl gap is out of spec and the cylinder would not rotate with rounds in the gun. Also, .020" Bbl gap is out of spec. I would like to see a picture of the burrs that are taking up the bbl gap on this gun.

End play is what you have when the cylinder is shut. When it's open the SP is designed to hit the stop on the frame, otherwise the cylinder would come right off.

You are correct I typed it wrong. It is .002 gap. It does rotate only because the only part that touches are the burs. Not enough to hold it up

.002" b/c gap is too small. You also have to measure headspace - on the other end - then calculate end shake, to get a better picture of everything. On the 101, the cylinder is retained by a boss on the left side of the frame, as shown. Where are the burrs? Photos? The first thing to do with these DA revolvers is to shake out all the filings and remove the burrs. That's just how they deliver them.

B/C gap should be about .002" - .006". Sounds like it needs a trip back to Ruger for a B/C gap adjustment among other things. I would give them a call and ask for a pre-paid shipper to send it back. Once they get it they will check everything but do include a note with what you think is wrong with the gun. ...and be patient.

I removed the burs on the end of each chamber and now have a consistent .007 gap. I was surprised how large some of the burs were, but now the face of the cylinder is polished smooth with a consistent gap.

It looks like the a few of the burs were .005 high. Now I hope .007 is not to much. Sorry, I thought I had taken a picture of the burs but I hadn't.

I bought a Blackhawk back in 1980 that had such a large bur in one chamber's I couldn't get a round in it till I bought a round file and filed it out.

It looks like the a few of the burs were .005 high. Now I hope .007 is not to much. Sorry, I thought I had taken a picture of the burs but I hadn't.
