NEW shingles shot

Just had the 2nd shot of the new Shingles vaccine. The nurse asked me if I had a reaction to the first shot. Being the first shot was several months ago + senior memory I didn’t remember.

The next day after the shot I was thinking this is the worst hangover I have had in years. THEN I remembered after the first shot I had a sore arm for several days + a “hangover” for a day.

I’m ok on the 2nd day after, arm a bit sore but hangover gone. No booze involved, just reaction to a shot.

So for folks getting the NEW shingles shot ( I had no reaction to the version 1 shot about 4 years ago) be aware of side affects and schedule the shot on a friday or saturday, if you are still working.

Note; the only other shot I’ve had that caused a problem was getting a penicillin shot in Navy boot camp. Shot in the butt and limped for a couple days after that one. I remember a couple of guys that got woozy and had to be grabbed before they fell over while we were at parade rest after the shot.

Gramps, I needed to get titers for "childhood" diseases for my clearance at a major children's hospital (gee a requirement that actually makes sense). Went to the doc and darned near had to beat them with a hammer to get it done. Makes no sense, but they would rather have vaccinated me with the whole spread rather than run a blood test.

Only thing I was didn't have antibodies for was Rubella. Guess what, it's a combo so even though I was vaccinated for Rubella I received vaccine for several others.

My mother had shingles, and if I think that I am coming down with them, I will get a shot. That is one painful disease, and I had mumps as a kid, which leaves the shingles-causing virus in the body. Forewarned is forearmed.

Shingles is caused by the measles virus, I believe. You might want to talk to your MD about the vaccine. I think it’s a preventive, not something you get injected with when you think you’ve come down with shingles.

Nope, it's chicken pox.

Also some think shingles is "an old folks affliction". I had a case of shingles in my early 30's in mid summer with no time off my fairly new job. Miserable doesn't come close to describing the literal agony. FWIW, less than a month later, my kids showed up with chicken pox.

Strange, I haven't been able to find ANY statistics showing what percentage of the population is apt to get shingles
(Note: Didn't spend hours researching this)
There is NO history of shingles in either side of my family, SO I think I'll skip the vacine' I DID get BOTH vacines for Pneumonia since I HAD that while in the Army AND I have COPD.

I remember when growing up a friend got shingles..... over 60 years that is the only person I've ever know that did...
I honestly wonder about all these vaccinations we are now supposed to get.... and wonder what they actually are putting in them.....

I had a case of the shingles at age 19. Awfully painful, and could hardly sleep for almost two weeks.

Colonialgirl - My MIL had a miserable case of the shingles at age 81. I sincerely hope you don't regret not getting the shot.

The Wife & I both got the "old" vaccine shot 5 years ago when we were fixin' to turn 70..

According to the CDC about 1 in 3 will get it in their lifetime.

Sounds high to me but I did get the shot just in case.

I think the older you get the better your chances of getting Shingles. My mother got it in her 90's and it is contagious. Best advice is to talk to your doctor.

Don't want the benefit of modern medicine, don't want any vaccines, you don't have to get them. Personally I take reasonable precautions and get vaccines and blood test and take prescriptions and I get dental work and colon screening and prostate exams etc on a routine schedule.

I had shingles in the mid 80’s while in my 30’s. Yep it hurt. Fast forward to 2008 when I started travel nursing, and as part of the deal my titers were drawn. All titers high except my Hep B, so received a booster. I have arthritis, any thing that ramps up my immune system makes the arthritis worse. I take vaccinations only when my titers call for it.

Our local health department that gave us the first shingles shot later recommended we get the new one, the first apparently had a lower percentage of effectiveness.

And having seen what my mother went through with shingles in her 70s, we don't mind the shots.

A few years ago I got a shingles shot at the V.A. one shot, had no reaction aint had the shingles or herpes break out fer a long time.

My grandfather contracted shingles in his late 80's, right around his waist. He was a very healthy and vigorous man who exercised daily. Bragged of keeping track of the miles on his exercycle, "I've been all the way to California!"
But I saw what a toll the shingles took on his vitality.
I urge everyone to get the shot.

BTW, he lived to age 91.

What amazes me is that this immunization is mostly for baby boomers. We were raised in a time when "childhood" diseases were almost forced on us during summer so we wouldn't get them during the school year.

We were also the first generation to start enjoying the benefits of immunization. How many of us would have suffered from things like polio without that one. So I am in wonder that my generation resists an immunization that will prevent a very miserable consequence of getting the disease out of the way.

As with anything medical, there is always a chance (and a darned small one at that) of a reaction. But the potential benefits far outweigh the potential adverse side effects.

But, my response to people who don't want this shot is the same as to parents who now thing immunizations are bad (too darned many "experts" telling impressionable idiots what to do). Make your decision, but don't you dare utter a peep if you or your kid gets a serious disease and you or your kid ends up suffering.

And especially with kids, that suffering can either end life or result in life long disability.
