I recently got a ruger 10/22 with a poly stock.

I tried to take it down to give it a good cleaning. But I cannot remove the stock!

I check the chamber, cocking the hammer. I removed the barrel band. I loosened the retaining screw in the center of the stock. I moved the safety to the 'halfway' position.

Now, I'm expecting the action and barrel to remain on the table when I lift the stock, but this doesnt happen. Everything seems to be just as stuck together as with the barrel band and screw in place.

Is there something obvious i'm missing? Do i just need to give the action a good smack to dislodge it? I tugged, pushed, and pulled but it didnt budge a millimeter.

I guess the thing to do is Wopp the heck out of it... are you sure the retaining screw is loose? but even with it not all the way loose the metal parts should slide up some.... sounds like it is just real tight to me. Rubber hammer or some type of good padding on the trigger guard should do it.

Make sure you're separating the action and barrel from the stock at the point where the barrel band goes.

The rear of the receiver tucks into the stock.

Also be careful of the safety catching; it doesn't want to stay centered.

Pretty elementary but have you removed the magazine?
Sometimes that safety can be a bit stubborn clearing the stock too.
Pull the action using the barrel just ahead of the forearm and holding the forearm itself and open it like a clamshell, making sure that the safety is not what's holding it up.
