This idea has been with me for sometime now so I finally went for it. The bolt has been lightend similar to the now defunct VQ 22short conversion kit. The gun runs good with true high velocity, hyper velocity, and 45gr subsonic. I'm going to play around with the main spring a little to get it to run dependable with standard velocity if I can otherwise if it don't I'm still satisfied with it.

Aww how cute. Did you replace the barrel or just shorten it? Why lighten the bolt?

To help the bolt achieve it's full stroke. After the the barrel was cut smaller the bolt had less pressure to force it rearward. It still does not work well with standard 22lr ammo but further work on the main spring should cure that.

Ok that makes sense. Did you know that would happen before cutting the barrel? I really like the way it turned out by the way.

How's the accuracy? Did you do anything else to it like trigger work or whatnot?

I tried to use the same logic that Volquartsen used on their 22 short conversion that they used to offer for the Ruger 22lr plstols. So it wasn't my original idea I just barrowed the logic to a different underpowered unit. Off hand at 15 yards with a couple of kinds of ammo it held 1" groups for the normal if I did my part and other ammo it went up to 1 1/2". The frame in the picture is temporary and belongs to my 22/45 Lite. It is tricked out with all the goodies from Volquartsen, Tandemkross, and Kane Wolf. Yesterday I bought a lower online from the classifieds on this forum and will trick it out also.

As time allows, I've been doing some experimentation similar to yours. My goal though, is a bit different. I've been working with a Ruger Mark III 22/45 RP that I'm using as the host for my suppressor. I have lightened an old Mark I style bolt by milling and drilling that bolt to make it lighter, using the same theory you are. If the bolt is lighter, it should be blown backward easier when using .22 rimfire ammunition with a lower FPS rating. My madness involves using the suppressor and "CCI Quiet" ammunition, in an attempt to make even "less" noise than the suppressor provides currently, but still have the pistol cycle 100%. Some have suggested using a lower weight mainspring in the mainspring housing assembly, so, I bought some of those. Trouble is, I measured the wire diameter, outside diameter, inside diameter and length of the lower power springs and they are very close, too close I think, to what the Ruger factory springs measure. My plan is to still try one of the lower power mainsprings, just to see if that will help, but my doubts are there.

You may already have this photograph of an old Volquartsen 22 Short Conversion Kit. It may help with your project.

I don't have one of these kits on-hand, if I did, I'd send you one for inspection/measurement. Perhaps the photograph can assist with the outcome of the project.

I do have that photo, and back when Volquartsen still had those kits available, I sold a couple. At that time I only had a few folks who were interested in shooting "shorts" in Ruger pistols, and mostly for bullseye shooting, if I remember correctly. Only after more and more folks around this area began getting suppressors, did the question come up about quieting down these pistols, even more, by shooting some of the now more available, sub-sonic .22 long rifle rimfire ammunition, like the Federal "Suppressor" and "CCI Quiet". As time allows, it's fun to play with these pistols to see what can be done to get "there". I am using an older bolt to try to get the weight down on that bolt, but at this point, don't have a target weight to work to. I do have some lighter duty springs from Wolff, and I assume (rightly or wrongly) that Volquartsen doesn't make springs but buys those, from somebody like Wolff, or most likely Wolff, much the same as most others do.
