I have to say, this one is on my short list. It's not because it's tactical, it has rails, or I want to be a space cowboy. Most people wouldn't have this reason, but I have 3 kids that are getting towards the age of deer hunting. 2 of my kids are right handed, left-eye dominant, so they will learn to shoot off the left shoulder. Myself and one other of my children are right-eye dominant, so all my bolt actions are right handed. I see this gun as being a perfect single rifle to start them with. The 30-30 is a light kicker and good for deer, the stock is collapsible, and the barrel length is very manageable for a young person. I know most of you would say that an AR fits the bill. Unfortunately, I live in MA and we still have an "assualt weapons" ban. Just tossing in why this would work for me.

Nice! Although I think it would sell better with the proper caliber designation, like 7.62 OBC (Old Blackpowder Cartridge-nobody needs to know) or some such thing.

I've never been a fan of much plastic on guns, and I have never felt the need to mount a scope or anything else on the side or bottom of a gun. But I guess if you like that kind of thing, and your city or state or country won't let you have a semi-auto brass thrower, this might just be the next best thing.

I haven't checked the specs, so I'm not certain, but the barrel length appears to be very nearly the same between this monstrosity and the conventional wood-stocked version of the same rifle (actually a carbine).

I'd be willing to bet that the normal carbine plus a spare wood stock would cost less than the "tactical" version, allowing you to cut down one of the stocks for the kids and replace it with the normal stock once they've grown.

WWB, I guess you missed the part about 3 kids. It is a bit of a pain to switch the stock out for each child, but the M4 style stock would allow it to instantly fit each of the 3 kids. If it were just one kid I would just buy the correct handed version of a Ruger Gunsite Scout and add the spacers as necessary. In fact, if Ruger comes out with a youth version of the American it would go right to the top of the list, but for now I need the flexibility to fit each child.

I guess i understand the shock. However, i dont see how this is any different than what Springfield(and others) have done to the M-14. Have you seen all the plastic hanging off of some of those models? So, how is this any different? Possibly Mossy's attempt to lure the tactical generation to it's newest take on an American classic?

dgoalie, have you fully thought through the notion of teaching your right-handed left-eyed kids to shoot lefty? Reason I ask is I'm right-handed, left-eye dominant too and I've shot all my life right-handed, and if I may be immodest, I'm a heck of a shot! I would hate to push a kid into a life of trying to find left-handed rifles for no other reason than they're left eye dominant. I have always simply closed my left eye when shooting either rifle, shotgun or pistol. In fact, most people do this involuntarily. Once that left eye is closed, the right eye focusses just fine.

Just want you to really think it through before you force sort of unnatural ambidextrousness in them that may not even be needed. More than that, you'd be essentially "dooming" them to a life of much reduced firearm choices.

Yes you're right, "Picatinny" ... not "Weaver" ...

Those guys will eventually build a gun that is 100% Picatinny Rail with a small hole somewhere for the bullets to come out, mark my words. It will be like firing a porcupine, but they'll admire it as their eyes roll back in their heads and they fall into a seizure of ecstasy.

Maybe, but i think the idea of a lever gun with modern sights (which this one doesnt really have) and a L.O.P. adjustable stock is a good idea. I can remember being a kid and struggling with great gram's 1894 Winnie Half Mag because it was too big. An adj stock would have fixed that.

I like this thing, but I want it in .45 colt (or .44mag) with ghost ring sights.
