I've got a question about the first new models I've been trying to get one of each of the new model's without the barrel warning and just got a 4 5/8" 41 mag and it looks unfired but no box can anbody tell me why the serial number is under the cylinder instead of more forward on the frame than the other new models and the cylinder has the recessed chambers with the firing pin grove but is numbered to the gun. manufactured date is 1974 were they using up old model parts, also what year did they start the warning on the barrel. thanx for any info

Yup, the early NM's used up the left over OM cylinders. The "billboard" barrel rollmarks began to appear in '78, IIRC.

s/n location? Well, since the NM's had one less "action pivot" pin there was more room available to "center up" the multi-digit s/n's. Ah, and the Blackhawks no longer had the "eagle" as part of the cylinder frame markings.

JMHO,
