Purchased a new Ruger Bisley in 45C awhile back. Just getting around to trying to find a load it likes. The other day I shot over 150 rounds with various bullet/powder combinations. So far it really likes the 250XTP with 10 grains of Power Pistol. It also shoots the Oregon Trail 255 SWC well with Unique. My velocities are running tween 1000 and 1100 fps depending on the mix. I know Hornady says their 250 XTP is good from 800 to 1500 ( ? ) but I'm just a little skeptical. Anybody using the 250 XTP at those velocities ?? If you've ever recovered one , hows it look , or how'd it perform on deer ? ( I use the 44 cal XTPs in my 44 mag , work great but they're pushing close to 1400 fps ) And what about the 255 SWC at 1050 or so ?? I'd rather see it at 1100 or so , but soon as I start to jack it up , I lose my accuracy. Opinions ? I'm open for your thoughts. Thanks

Oh and BTW , I'm over the " T-Rex loads " syndrome ....I prefer the modest loads :)

WELL LET ME ASSURE YOU OF THIS : Your loads as-is will kill the stew outta any deer that ever walked, expansion be darned. They're already 45 caliber bullets and a deer is about as hardly as if he were made outta air and cheese. A 45 caliber 250-255GR SWC bullet at 900-950FPS will whiz though any deer from any angle cutting a 45 caliber hole from stem to stern. Yours at 1100 will do the same since you are using the Oregon Trail bullets which won't expand on anything softer than a Sherman Tank; THIS IS A GOOD THING !!

Here is some good reading for you ... with some loads as well :)

.45 Colt Dissolving the Myth

13g HS-6 was accurate for me at exactly 1100fps under 255g SWC. 5 1/2" barrel.

And of course the following pdf should be in your binder as well : Brian Pearce .45 Colt article

Should note my favorite load is still 20g of IMR 4227, magnum primer, under 255g SWC for 1030fps.
Another good load is 11g of AA#5 under 255g SWC for 961fps.

Wil Terry , Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking along those lines also , just needed someone to reenforce them for me. Think I'll go with the Power Pistol and the 255s. If I can squeeze just a little bit more out of it....with out losing the low recoil or accuracy.

RClark , Thanks also for your opinions. I have read John Linebaughs article. Hes got some interesting theories. Or maybe I should proven facts. I just don't need nor do I want to push the limits that far for my .45. I recently sold my SRH in 454 , had I wanted a bruiser ... I'd a kept it. Several people have told me they liked the HS6 , I'd sorta like to try it but don't have any on the shelf...that would be a "one gun" powder. Same goes on the imr 4227 , used to use it for my Hornet....sold it. Still have a cup or so of powder left , maybe I'll try it. Thanks again
