New Henry AXE

This new sidegate offering will be on the shelves very soon. It's kinda like the existing .410 shotgun but with a sorta pistol grip. Barrel is not quite 16" & OAL is 26". 5+1. Other than looking cool, I have no idea what it's intended to be used for. Snakes maybe? Pic below:

Testing the customer base waters, getting the production bugs worked out, etc. Do they need new equipment/production lines or can they use existing machinery and lines? A smart company doesn't jump head first into a big change like this. There's a lot of money involved.

What’s the definition of these guns with cut off stocks? Are they pistols or rifles? I don’t think it’s a short barrels rifle with a 16 inch barrel is it? Are they meant to be fired one handed or do you hold the gun with both hands while shooting?

I suppose you could call it a short barrel smooth bore. But whatever it is, Henry got the ATF to approve the design as a non-NFA firearm. As for shooting it - however you want.

ETA: Mossberg got the basic design (the 590 Shockwave) approved by the ATF a couple years ago. Here's the ATF's answer:

That said, the Mossberg, and now this Henry, is not legal in CA or MA since the barrel is under 18" - and it's scary looking. :roll:

Light recoil, short enough for easy handling, enough length of barrel to make .410 self-defense loads effective, and the Axe allows Henry to get in on that lucrative Shockwave action without having to retool their production lines. Plus Mare's Leg-style guns are cool, to boot. What's not to like?

For a house gun, I'd think an Axe with Hornady's 2 1/2" buck-and-ball load (a .41 slug over a couple of triple-oughtish sized lead balls) would work quite well, especially for the recoil-sensitive. I want one of them myself. Although I'd rather have a pistol-caliber sideloading Big Boy (and I'll bet Henry has those on the drawing boards already).

No, the reason we have length limits on long guns is that FDR's original draft of the NFA '34 placed handguns in the same prohibited category as machine guns, and he didn't want people turning rifles and shotguns into handguns. The Congress of the time balked at the handgun restrictions and those were removed, but the SBR and SBS portions of the law remained in effect.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the SBR/SBS length limits overturned. I've always kinda wanted an Ithaca Auto and Burglar . . . :mrgreen:

I have shot a friends 12 ga. shockwave, fun gun to shoot. I think The pump action on a shotgun like this would would be easier to shoot than the lever action.
