New Conversion Cylinders for the ROAs

Hey Guys,
Well I finally bit the bullet, OK a PUN, and bought two 45 conversion cylinders for my ROAs. These were made for me by Chris at Howell Conversions. They were R&D Conversions at one time. I wanted fluted cyls. with a Black Powder Bevel on them. So I called the factory, who also have the best prices. :wink:
Well let me tell you about Howell and Chris. They did outstanding work, they are the same overall as the C&Bs, they were sent when I was told they would be by one day. Chris called me to tell me he would be ONE DAY LATE. Since I was buying two he paid for shipping and no charge for the BP bevel. The price was as stated. So how much better can it get?
Now I know some of you guys will say geeeeeeeeeeee you can get a whole gun for the price of a cylinder. Well let me know when you find a 3 screw 45 Vaquero that will also shoot C&B. I don't care what you do to a new model it still feels like a new model. Yea I have a few. :roll:
Anyway now when I go to a match and it is raining I don't have to load C&Bs in the rain Trust me I have and it ain't fun. Also I can spend more time practicing and not so much time loading.
The cartridges you see are 45 Colt and the 45 Cowboy Special. The CBS allows you to load less powder (money 21Grs. verse 38Grs.) and you don't need a filler for less recoil. A full case of 3F Goex and a 250 Gr. bullet in a Colt case will get your attention. I loaded the CBS 21 3F and a 200 Gr. bullet It is still a stout load.
So all you guys that want a rimed 45 ACP here ya go.
I really enjoy the ROAs now they are a lot More versatile and will be shooting this weekend in a big match.

Those are a pair of nice looking guns and the cylinders look good also. Do you have to supply the dimensions of the original cylinder when you order. With so much discussion on exchanging cylinders in the Blackhawk revolvers about making sure the timing and cylinder gap and overall length is correct how is it that this is not as important on the ROA's? Were your cylinders a drop in fit or did you send your guns in to have them fit?

Chris told me that they have a ROA frame that they fit the cylinder to.
Well like I said they are the same OAL as the Ruger C&B cyls. He also stated that 99% that he sends out fit. All I can say is some folks make stuff harder than it needs to be. Since I have a lot of files I knew I could make whatever he sent me work :lol: :lol: :lol: They just drop right in and that is what they advertise. I can swap out the cylinders on all my CAS guns. When I take stuff apart to clean up the BP at the match I don't want to remember what part goes to what gun :wink:

i will be ordering one myself very soon.... I don't like that they dont have the safety knotches between the cylinders though.... that is a big deal to me. I would rather have the knotches then the window cuts....

Why :roll: Load 5 just like any other single action. I don't use the ones I have. It would not be allowed at a match." Hammer will rest on an empty chamber" End of story.
Now if I was going to a gunfight I would load six :lol: I would probably need 50-60 rounds
Hell the old model Rugers, except 357 don't even have a window. Now that is a pain.

Allan Harton did the cylinders along with cutting the barrels and loading lever from 7 1/2" to 5 1/2" also removed all the writing.
Since I load the cyl out of the gun I leave the ramrods off.

Thanks I really like them and they are a joy to shoot. I have also got them to work from 19# to 17# springs. Makes it easier to shoot one handed. They are pretty smoooooooooooooooooooooooooth :wink:

Wow, those are true customs all the way from custom cut barrels and SBH hammers to ramrods and cylinders.

Did Alan make the ramrods different from the factory 5.5" barrel models to improve the leverage of the shorter ramrod?

No all he did was cut out a section. I have never used the ramrods to load. WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYyyyyyyyyy to much trouble and takes to long. Have used the ones on my Walker and 1860 Army

You guys have really missed the point in convertibility. Go over to Sportsmans Guide and look up the .45C .22 inserts. They are about $50.00 plus shipping. The .22's load into the insert and have a short polygonal barrel.
I have never used them in a BP conversion unit. They work in Redhawks and Blackhawks.

I can't see that you could hit the broad side of a barn with those 22 inserts. Anyone ever try them?

They are ok for practicing trigger work, breaking plates and practice shooting from hip etc. I wouldn't expect match grade accuracy with 3/4" of tube. hehe

Do they rattle as they exit the barrel?
