new challenge

Blind Son handed me his 'new to him' Iowa legal deer rifle so I can make the modifications to allow a friend/co-worker of his to be his aiming assistant. Mossberg bolt action in 350 Legend with which I'm totally unfamiliar so I'll have to do a bit of searching to find compatible mounting bases and such.
One part that would make things go much easier would be a continuous one piece picatinny mount base. Any suggestions?

Why incorporate any sighting systems? Your blind son only uses point shooting, instinctive reflex items. Yet the next/ other user may not meet your sons perimeters. LOP, Cast On/OFF, Drop at Comb etc . WHy? Just tailor the firearm for your sons usage. JMHO YMMV.

Deer hunting up to 150 yards will require more precise aiming. The reason for the new equipment: Iowa chooses to restrict hunting rifles to calibers that I/we don't need/use/own in the free state of Missouri. The different rifle is simply a change to meet Iowa regulations--my design is proven and successful.
FWIW, before Son moved to Iowa he was a very accomplished shooter/hunter. He/we were on Buckmasters TV, Bass Pro's Outdoor World TV, and a couple of local features when he was a teenager.

Thanks, I found a base that fits and possibly have the rest of parts on hand. Really too busy with planting to do mush with this project at the moment.
FWIW, there are both picatinny and Weaver bases available and this model seems to be a short action. I've had zero experience with either this model rifle or the 350 Legend cartridge so starting from scratch. The deal came with 3 brands of ammo and possibly the first owner didn't have much experience with either centerfire rifle or scope use.

They are "OK". Years ago I bought my youngest Son a Patriot youth model in 243 when he was 12. He outgrew it within the next two deer seasons. He kept it, and got a nice full size stock from Boyds. That full stock with 20" barrel makes it's pretty handy in tight areas like a stand/blind or night predator hunting.

EGW one piece Picatinny rail for Mossberg Patriot Long Action or Short Action if it’s a compact model is your best bet.
It’s affordable $40-60, solid aluminum, and gives you a continuous rail for easy scope offset red dot positioning perfect for an aiming assistant setup.

I ended up with both Weaver and EGW bases. Looks like the EGW is going to work better with the offset adaptors I have.
Years ago, EGW donated several bases for use in modifying for the assisted sighting device but I was using Savage actions back then.
With planting finished and some open time before the next round of spraying, maybe I can generate enough gitty-up to work on this project. I'm a bit concerned that Son's new 'assistant gunner' has underestimated the demands of his task so probably need to give them as much time as possible to work on it.
I know that many Iowa deer chasers are a bit casual about pre-hunt preparation. I have several Cousins living north of the border and although we joke about it, I sort of believe the stories about pre-season prep.

As told by one of my Iowegian cousins: 5PM on the day before deer season three guys get off work and drive by each of their houses to pick up their 'deer guns'. Then they hit the closest convenience store for deer tags, a 24 pack of beer, and whatever slugs the store might have on hand. They drive out into the country looking for an open spot (emptying the 24 pack box as they go). By the time they find an open area, it's dark and they're pretty well anesthetized to recoil. They set the empty beer box in the right of way and launch a few slugs toward it from 25 yards away. If any of the slugs hit, it's called good enough and they head back to another convenience store for more beer and whatever slugs that store might have on hand(cause they shot up all they'd bought earlier).
I apologize to any Iowa deer hunters who don't fit this description but it's too funny to let go.

I spent a number of years deer hunting in Iowa so I pretty much know what he is talking about. My brother and I killed deer in Iowa most every year, and we lived in Des Moines (me for 20 years). We both grew up hunting and fishing in South Dakota, so we kinda knew about the preparation stuff. Spent a good amount of time turkey hunting in the areas we hunted deer for as well.
