New 22/45 won't shoot ?

Hello,

Just bought a new 22/45 and have been trying to get it dialed in. I have used some different ammo as well as a new Millet red dot and for some reason i either have high expectations or the gun is crap?

It as far as i can tell is a 20ft gun or closer as about 30-50 ft is is inches off from shot to shot with and without the flash hider and with different ammo too, what gives?

I am just trying to get it to group about a 1" or so and having to stand 10 ft away to do that makes a gun worthless IMO. Does anybody have any thoughts on what is going on or is this typical of this gun?

I have a target barrel scope rail 4" barrel with red dot

That is not typical for that gun. :(

1) Have you tried multiple brands of ammo? Sometimes that makes a marked difference. What brand(s) have you tried?

2) Have you tried shooting it with iron sights? Your scope mount might be loose, or your optic may be defective.

3) Have you checked for "leading" in the barrel? I've only had it happen a couple of times, but it can destroy your accuracy quickly. Wet down the bore really good with a few patches of solvent, then hit it with a tight bore brush. If you get helical "slivers" out of the bore, it's leaded. Remington Thunderbolts are one brand of ammo that have a bad reputation for leading up barrels. Solution: a good cleaning, and an ammo switch.

4) Have you had anyone else shoot the gun? I seem to recall a little "operator error" in a few of my guns over the years! :P

Good luck. The gun should be capable of much better groups, especially with a red dot.

I get paid to shoot for a living, but yes two others have shot the pistol as i was curious too about my ability. I also have a bull barrel 10/22 that can hit pennies at 50+ yards and this pistil is good for 20ft tops

I have shot that new M-22 for plinking

CCI copper plated round, CCI copper plated hollow nose, Blazer lead and i have some yellow jacket to try soon

As the previous gentleman asked...Did you shoot the gun prior to mounting your optics?

It has a rail no sights so no i guess not hard to sight it in like that

Didn't realize it didn't have sights. Did you try a different optic?

If that doesn't work and the mount is tight, I'd say a call to Ruger is in order.....

I have taken the red dot off and checked the rail, tight but i took it off and then applied loctite and tightened it down again for the heck of it.

Anybody think the Millet red dot is good, paid about $100 new for it just want to eliminate that maybe but it was tight too.

What is a good distance for say 2" grouping for this pistol? maybe 20ft is tops?

Millet's are decent, Bushnell owns 'em and they have pretty good customer service.
I can easily get 2" groups @ 50' with my 4 1/2" Mk III Target w/Burris TR25 red dot , haven't tried for groups much farther than that with it. Yours should do it as well.
You might try the Millet on the 10/22 (you know it shoots) and that should let you know if the sight is the problem.

2-3" at 25 yards with an iron-sighted 5.5" 22/45 (rested) is more what I find typical from my own experience, and I think that is due much more to the limitations of my eyesight than the real potential of the pistol itself.

You might try the Millet on the 10/22 (you know it shoots) and that should let you know if the sight is the problem.

I would agree with that line of thinking.

Just because something is new, doesn't mean it isn't defective.

spent a bit of time getting the 4x30 dialed in on the .920 hate to have to take it off and do it again but have to do what i got to do

FWIW i did bench it yesterday and was 2-3ish at about 45-50 ft it just seemed a bit more inconsistant that i would have liked.

I also am not liking the Millet rings really and am going to look for another 25mm set or make some. Stopped into a gun shop and there was some little Bushnelol for $130 that looked nice but i am going to try to save the shot two time Millet first and i happen to like the size and stuff.

I will go tomorrow and play with it LOL and try this new yellow jacket and see what gives and report back for those following and helping. I will bring a 30ft tape and some paper targets and if i find out how to post pics or a helpful member willing to post we can see what i did and i can also show the mod i did to aholster to work with the rail and red dot too

Still unanswered is this shooting from a rested position or with some sort of support? If not, I question the results even if"you do get paid to shoot for a living".
Long ago and far away, I got paid to shoot things for a living(if I shot well enough, I lived) but that didn't mean I was a perfect shot with a pistol.

In the post above i wrote i bench tested it so i would have thought being apid shotter you knew what that meant

If i tell you the gun does not shoot well trust me it does not this is not my first firearm. I also have had others(mentioned that as well) that shot it and had similar results.

Is the screw on barrel front end tight?

going to take a look seems tight but never hurts

measured off exactly 30ft and rechecked the base, barrel, and scope mounts.

Tried yellow jacket Remmington hollow point as well as some CCI copper plated hollow varmits.

CCI grouped better overall and the CCI i was able to get 1" groups pretty regular

I am hoping this is better what does everybody think?
