Went to and shot my 30-06 yesterday to try something new. I got some Hornady 30c ( 308") 86 gr. sp/rn. . Put 60.0 grs. of IMR 4320 in. Shot it at 25 yds. and it looked good. But when I shot it at a 100 yds. thing went down hill. The bullet was braking up in the air before it was getting to the target. Had to be over 3800 FPS. I just never seen a bullet do this before. I'll just have to slow it down.

That bullet isn't meant to be shot out of a 30-06 & especially at those velocities.
I've seen similar results of shooting Speer 125 flat point HP(meant for 30/30) at starting load velocity from 30/06. Experiment didn't work. Try something more suitable.
Well a up date on the 86 gr. bullet in the 30-06. Tried it with 50 gr. of 4320 power , not slow enough was no good. Then went to H4198 . Tried 30 gr. & that was about 2500 fps and that was no good. All over the target. So went to 700x power , from 4.0 to 7.5 gr. , well the 7.5 grs. worked ok at 50 yds. . A 3 shot group a little smaller then a quarter. About 1200 fps... Good to shot coyotes.

I've had pretty good luck w/ similar .30-06 "pop gun" loads using Unique and cast bullets. Lightest jacketed bullet I've used is 110 gr., the RN for the .30 Carbine. Pistol "type" bullets just don't seem all that happy at very high velocities in my experience...

I like that bullet in my 30-30 with a reduced load of H4895. Not as accurate as a 150gr FP, but ok. I tried 110gr FMJ in the 30-30 and they wouldn't group. I can't imagine an 85gr bullet.Mobuck said:
My suggestion for the OP would be a 125gr bullet and some proven mild loads of H4895. Hodgdon has a whole section of reduced rifle loads using H4895.
