Neighbors?

Do ya’ll get along with your neighbors? This morning i was talking with my wife, and I mentioned the older lady next door. I said I can’t wait for her to move. She’s nice enough, just a little cranky and seems to be moody. We have two dogs. And if they poop in her yard, my wife cleans it up, just to avoid any trouble. A couple weeks ago, some other dog pooped in her yard, she scooped it up and threw it in our yard.

But our other neighbors are real pieces of work. We’ve tried to be friendly, but he scowls and grunts at us, never says anything. When they moved in we brought them some ice cream, they said “thanks.” That was the last thing they’ve said to us, about 5 years ago.

I had a package get delivered to his door about 6 months ago. I knocked and told I’m what happened. He closed the door in my face without any words, spent about 3 minutes getting the package, and then, honest to God, opened the door, shoved the package to me and slammed the door in my face. Nothing said.

Today, another package got delivered to their house from Amazon. I called Amazon and told them I will not go get the package. They said they will call me tomorrow. Which is really strange. They didn’t offer a refund. I said their driver can go ask for the package if they want. I’m not sure how it will turn out.

Anyway, I told my wife I feel cheated because we’ve had some neighbors which are nice, but more weird, crazy people. Back in Jersey, one lady was nice, she was something like 93 years old and lived alone. While another household would not talk to us at all.

I hope you guys have neighbors you like.

Thanks.

I do try to be a good neighbor. We've had packages come to our house meant for other people. Always we've walked them over to the correct house. For example our same house number, but different street. That's the most common.

We've also had some new neighbors move in three houses down. I stopped by and talked with them a bit. But then this whole Covid thing makes any sort of interaction more difficult etc.

What I don't get, is why the angry neighbor next door, doesn't walk the package over and toss it on my front porch. I'm going to wait and see if he will do that.

I dont hav close neighbors. I whizz off my porch ever morn and ever evnin

My neighborhood is old school. Mostly because a lot of us were born at the hospital three blocks away, many went to the same elementary school. There are only to middle schools, and when we attended only one public high school. Our parents had only one middle school and the same high school. So they pretty much knew each other.

Now add this to the equation. Five of the houses on my block are owned by folks who's parents still live on the block. Three others are owned by kids that grew up in those houses. I guess in a way we are almost an incestuous group. In fact in thinking about it the only folks on the block not born in town are a family from Germany. But he's a gear head so they fit right in.

Lift a hood around here and you'll have a couple of kibitzers in a heart beat.

It takes all types. In my youth I was always meeting erstwhile "senior citizens" (Don't think I ever met a Junior Citizen) who never learned their manners, were arrogant, cranky-rude-thought the Sun rose and set with them. Now at age 71 I still keep running into them.
Years ago I lived in a rental unit, there was one crabby and cranky young woman who lived there, in winter if she saw a shoveled out parking space she took it, never saw her out shoveling.
No complaints about my current neighbors, no cranks, grouches or curmudgeons, the parents keep an eye on their children, no drunks or fights or wild parties.

It's good to have nice neighbors but as far as yours goes Kevin, be thankful they are just rude and inconsiderate. Still, they guy who slammed the door in your face after holding your package hostage deserves a little attention. That man was anxiously waiting for you to have to come to his door so that he could be rude to you. That's a man without a purpose.

I live on 5 acres out in the hills. Everyone that lives out here has acreage. I have two neighbors that are not really in shouting range. I don't even know there names. They mind their own business and I mind mine. We use the same dirt roads to access our properties so there is always the friendly wave if we happen to pass each other. That's the way I like it. If a new neighbor moved into the area, I darn sure wouldn't run over there with a plate of cookies. A good neighbor is one you don't have to "deal" with. Not dealing with neighbors is what keeps things neutral. If I wanted to get chummy with neighbors I'd still live in the city.

We get along fine with ours, but I have lived in the neighborhood for decades and have known most of the long time residents here and most are long timers for many years!

On another board I visit a woman who is a longtime non-Mormon resident of Utah says she has found her neighbors unfriendly.
There was an older black lady in my neighborhood-she's gone now. A widow, in her late 70s, I would sweep and shovel her walk and steps on snowy days. She let my cats visit and gave them goodies, so I felt I owed her something.

I'm absolutely upset that the landowners on the opposite side of the county road gave/sold/gifted a spot just across said road to their Daughter & SIL to build a new house. There's going to be people within hearing distance and house less than 1/4 mile away. Totally DISGUSTING. They'd better be OK with gunfire at any time of the day since I'm NOT changing my way of life just because they encroached on my space.
Bad attitude?? Darned tootin.

Well one of the beauties of living in an Airpark is that we all have a common interest. Of the 49 lots we are all friends some are better friends than others. I can call or go to any of them for help and I would do the same. It's been this way for 42 years. For example. My hangar has NEVER BEEN LOCKED and I tell neighbors if they need a tool or such just go get it and leave a note to let me know. I have also painted 4 airplanes no charge except for beer for neighbors.
I do believe most pilot/airplane owners tend to be more outgoing and treat others better. :D

No problems with any of my neighbors but we don't live on top of one another. Actually I sometimes shoot with my next door neighbor.

We have had good and bad neighbors. Overall I would say most of my neighbors are not really bad but mostly just ignore you. I used to joke that they wouldn’t say hi even if they had to step over your body laying on the sidewalk. Unfortunately that came true. A few years back, I stepped out and went down steps that had iced over. I broke a couple ribs and a couple of vertebrae. It took over an hour and a half for paramedics to get to me. Sprawled out on the sidewalk on a light glaze of ice, several people walked by without talking to me or asking if I needed assistance. I was kind of hard to miss. I did acknowledge each person that walked by.
My wife and I look forward to moving in the very near future to a more friendly area.
In contrast, when I go visit my sister in Alabama, and walk around her neighborhood, everyone waves and greets you. People even do it if they are in a car. That is the way people should act.

If the Mormons were unfriendly to a non-Mormon they would positively hate me. My paternal grandmother was Mormon. Right up until they kicked her out of the church, and most of the family disowned her. Her terrible sin. She fell in love and married a non-Mormon soldier heading to France in WW I. Can't say I care much for folks that act like that.

Wow, get a grip! and attempt to get along! Sounds like YOU are the one who will be a problem!
It's a whole lot easier to get along than not get along think about that! Just cause you were there first
does not give you any privilege at all! They own land across from you get use to it!
Makes me wonder which one of you will be the neighbor from hell! Get off on the right foot and
give them a chance. They are probably excited and happy don't ruin it! Remember your first place?
Takes less effort to smile than it does to frown! ps

"Wow, get a grip! and attempt to get along! Sounds like YOU are the one who will be a problem!"

Maybe so. but here's the reason: I can count on ONE HAND the number of people in a 5 mile radius who lived in the house where they live now when I set up housekeeping on this place. Those who moved in later are often the ones who tend to demand that everyone else meet their expectations.
For instance: I've stopped by the new house location multiple times attempting to be friendly only to meet a perceived aloofness and disinterest in my attempts. When I mentioned we intended to burn a derelict house and doze off some junk trees in a pasture across the fence, the people informed me they liked the view of the structure and thorn trees. Guess their decision to doze away the pear tree that attracted deer like a magnet and build a house in that spot w/o even a comment to me was OK?? Give and take?? Sounds like all give and no get.

Neighbors can be a pain in the neck, no doubt, I had a rabid one nearly two decades ago when I
lived in New Hampshire! Since then I go out of my way not to aggravate anyone just for the sake of peace!
That IMO makes life a whole lot better. No real need to be best buddies just be civil to each other. ps

That may be the reason no one wants to live next to you.

Generally yes we all get along. My neighbor on one side has been here longer than we have. We moved in in 1981. We have had a couple disagreements but nothing major. The husband passed away a few years ago, The wife still is there and active, She and I are the same age. The house on the other side has had three different occupants since we arrived, The first was friendly but not a buddy type. They left for Florida after about two years. The next couple were 'strange'. Not sociable at all. About six years ago he took a shotgun to his wife and then himself. The present couple have two small children, are sociable, but again due to age difference not our 'friends'. Our entire neighborhood is kinda 'laid-back' and is off the 'beaten track'. It is a 'wave as you go by' type of place.

Ahh,, the proverbial neighbor issue.

Some are great, some are good, some are ok, some are bad, & some can be criminal.

I have lived all my life (except for my military time,) within 5 miles of where I was raised. I have witnessed this small cozy tourist type area change a lot. It used to be that people lived here, raised their families here, and many even lived in the same building as their small business. Wintertime,, much of it closed or slowed way down.
As such,, everybody knew everybody,, and most got along with their neighbors,, or at least were tolerant of them. But in general,, we were a community that pulled together to help one another. We only had one police officer. Oh, there were the odd exceptions,, and there were the few who moved into the area,, only to not find the happiness & bliss they desired, & moved on.
Times changed,, ever so slowly.
First,, it was a gated resort, that decided that they wanted to expand & become THE controlling force in making decisions for the entire town. Which would benefit them greatly. And with that bunch promoting things,, along came a steady increase of real estate agents,, who started promoting this area,, as a hot spot for owning a vacation home. Development of raw land, lots, & more smaller gated or restricted communities sprang up. People bought land, built huge houses, (and in many cases, in places that were not good or safe to build,) and became part timers,, or even worse,, used their new vacation home as a vacation rental to make money.
With all that,, the newcomers all started wanting specific services,, or demanded things of the Town,, to where laws & regulations started forcing many people to alter the way they had lived for decades. Many "locals" moved away,, selling out to get away from such things.

Many people came to this area,, and it was often hear; "Back in XYZ we did things like,,,,!" Or, "Back in XYZ we had ,,,,,,, we need that here!"
Fences were built to divide property lines & it of course,, made folks NOT learn who their neighbors were.
And many people would buy a place,, THEN complain to the town or others about something the neighbors had, did, or didn't do. All because it didn't fit what THEY wanted.
Example; One older, well off couple,, bought a nice house,, and then AFTER they moved in,, they went to the town & wanted the neighbor to cut down his trees to give them a better view. They actually sued to try & get this done.
And within all this,, there soon formed groups,, or "clique's" of people who had similar interests,, such as serious golfers,, or gardeners, who used their group influence to "make changes" & force neighbors to do things "to better the community."
All this has led to a very expensive & hard to live in town anymore. Oh, and the police force NOW required by the town has 18 officers, to do what ONE used to easily manage.

Some people feel; "It's my property, and nobody can tell me what to do on it."
Some people feel; "I bought this place & it should be like XYZ, and my neighbor needs to change his place."
Some people are very social.
Some people are not very social.
Some enjoy a hobby that others may hate. (Think shooting.)
Some are Democrat.
Some are Republican.
Some are Baptists.
Some are Catholic.
Some are Mormon.
Some are Episcopalian.
Some are straight.
Some are gay.
Some are black.
Some are white.
Some are wealthy.
Some are poor.
Some are hard workers.
Some are lazy.
Some are criminal.
Some are LEO.

To get along with people,, you have to accept others as they are. You have to be willing to give AND take a bit. Some people try to be kind, good neighbors,, and others do not. You can't change them,, but you can be as good to them as you can. And if y'all can get along,, or find common interests,, it usually works out to where you are both good neighbors to each other.

I moved out of my downtown home several years ago,, after we settled my parents estate & all. After a family lawsuit,, (my nephews,, their mom, (who was my brother's ex-wife,) and their step-dad, sued the estate,) I gave up some land to them. But I had it included in the deed that there was a gun range across the road to the property I gave up. Later on,, the nephews sold the property. The buyer was doing so as an investment. He divided part of it,,, and sold a piece to a young couple. The day I learned of it,, they had just closed the deal, and I saw them parked on the side of the road. As I often wondered about folks breaking down, or possibly doing something else, I stopped. I heard gunfire. Apparently, the new owners,, ALSO enjoyed shooting.
We hit it off right away. Good young folks working on a family,, and WANTED a place to be able to shoot etc.
Not long after that,, a guy who owned property adjoining me above my house,,(who was a druggie, an informant, multiple charges for DUI & other such stuff,,) with whom I didn't get along with because of his lifestyle, sold the land above me. The new owner was actually a local guy,, wanting to move a bit further out of where he'd been living. Plus, he wanted more land to do things he wanted to do. We met,, and in our discussions,, he carefully & politely asked me; "My son likes to ride dirt bikes,, and I want to build him a track. Do you have a problem with that?" I looked at him, square in the eye,, and said; "Do you have a problem with gunfire?" After a very short pause, I added; "I own a gun range,, and if you don't mind gunfire,,, I don't mind dirt bikes." His relief was quickly apparent,, and we also became good neighbors.

In the country,, in general, many folks do try & get to know their neighbors,, and get along. Often,, we need to rely upon each other instead of "government supplied" services. And we also know who are the good honest folks,, and who may not be the best to trust.

To have a good neighbor,, you have to also be a good neighbor.
But sometimes,, personalities or lifestyles prevent that.

I have great neighbors. For example, my neighbor gave me a ride to the hospital for my recent surgery and waited around all day a few days later to give me a ride home. I was really in bad shape and he even tired my shoes because I was unable to bend down that far without severe pain. He missed time from work to help me out and I owe him big time. Thank God for good neighbors!

One additional comment on neighbors. I have had several clients write-in special gifts to their neighbors within their trust documents as a thank you for being, well, great neighbors. How nice a surprise would that be?

just wondering how much your dogs bark....the only problem I have ever had with neighbors have been over dogs.

They do bark, but when they do, if they are outside, I go bring them inside. We don’t leave them outside when we leave the house. Yes, I’ve wondered if barking dogs are the problem. The neighbors also have barking dogs, so I’m not sure.

I think they are just private people. I really don’t see them very much. Here in our neighborhood, the garages are in the back of the house off an alley. If you park your car in the garage, you might not ever see the neighbors out front. The lots are fairly good sized, mostly ranch style homes, which tend to be

I'm glad ya’ll seem to have good neighbors, for the most part.

We won’t live here forever. In fact we will probably move away from the big city when our daughter graduates from high school in a few more years.

Good neighbors. Good balance of minding our own business, but waving at each other outside and talking once in a while. No raucous parties, no junkmobiles. We watch over the neighborhood informally. Mis-delivered mail and packages are exchanged and become an occasion to catch up on what's going on if we want.

I'd be happy with the guy that may not be friendly, but otherwise leaves me alone.

I don't know many of my neighbors well but I also live on a 45 mph road. My next door neighbor & I did hunt together some several years ago. He got a job as a prison guard & seemed to get pushier & pushier. I didn't get into a fuss or anything, I just became unavailable. The last few years his attitude seems to have changed. We do wave & speak but don't interact much.
The people that live on the flag lot behind him are very nice but we seldom interact. Interestingly enough the wife & I grew up within a couple of blocks from each other & never new each other until moving here. She is I think about 6 years older than me so we were not in the same schools at the same time.
The older couple that was on the other side of my next door neighbor was nice but they have moved away & left the home in the care of their drug addicted son & his wife. I am not really sure where they moved to. Try to avoid the son & his wife.
Some new people moved into the home next door on our down hill side but I haven't met them yet. I am going to go try to speak to them soon. I liked the people there when I first moved here but they were foreclosed. These are the second ones to live here since then.
Where I live we all have lots over an acre. The people on the flag lot have 3 acres that extend down behind my home. Where there house is (up the hill) is cleared. The rest is wooded so I don't look out and see someone's backyard just trees. There are strips of woods in between the houses. Good fences make good neighbors.

I guess I've been fortunate to have good neighbors in the two homes I've owned over the past three decades. In my current neighborhood we know each other to some degree and wave to each other as we pass on the street. None of us socialize with one another but will step over and shoot the breeze for a few minutes every now and them.
