Needing recommendations on a 10/22 build

My son recently completed in a 4h steel challenge match and did extremely well... so now I am tasked with building some quality equipment..

Best lightweight barrel with sites ?
Leaning toward a kidd single stage trigger kit.
Magpull stock..
Cant have pistol grip or thumb holes

Help !!

Look at the KIDD light weight barrel. Tony guarantees ½ inch groups at 50 yards.

Looks like a GREAT package! That bunch on RFC is of the opinion that if it's NOT done their way, you ain't doin' it right. The "moderator" for that forum is a real "weenie". 10/22 rifles are not all that hard to modify or work on, and lord only knows there's a ton of aftermarket parts to consider.

By the time you buy a suitable replacement barrel, stock, trigger group and whatever other upgrades you decide on, you are 95% of the way to the cost of a complete Kidd or Volquartsen complete rifle suitable for what you want.

The "heart" of any 10/22 rifle is the barrel and how the rifling has been done. Trigger pull is not that hard to fix and bolt modification can be done if you have a drill press handy and the patience to do some of the work yourself.

Are "iron sights" a must have? A red-dot sight will provide 'quicker target acquisition', especially for speed steel. Some of the reflex red-dots are very reasonably priced.

+ 1 on the benefits of red dots. However, most Steel Challenge competitions have "RRIS" (rimfire rifle, iron sights) and an RRO (rimfire rifle, open) divisions and a red dot puts the rifle into the open category. Not an issue unless you are trying to compete in a specific division.
