I need loading information for .44 mag, .240 gr Semi Wad Cutter, using WLP primers, and Alliant 2400 powder. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
I don't load 2400, but know a few who do. One thing to watch for w/ that powder: about half of 'em report Chief's results, w/ good accuracy over a range of charges. The other half find 2400 to be a bit picky about finding the "sweet spot" which may end up being only 0.5 gr or so wide.
So if you try a load "everybody" says works IN THEIR GUN, and it doesn't in YOURS, don't give up too soon. Work up or down a little at a time... you'll probably find a really nice load along the way!

ARE YOU SAYING, SIR, that you do not have any loading manuals ??
DO NOT USE any loading data off the internet without checking it against several loading manual sources.
This of course assumes you like your current complement of fingers and eyeballs to remain where they are and working in a normal manner.

I doubt the OP is 12 years old so let's assume he is responsible and either choose to help him or skip the topic if you are concerned about his ability.

Barber, with the new electronic test equipment and legal responsibilities the the new data for the 240 swc using 2400 the books are downgrading the maximum load weight to 20.5. That was the number I used for the last few years. You have to take into account, and I am sure you know this, all the variables that affect the loaded cartridge...and I think you are using a good primer tor this project..good luckbarber said:

Are you loading lead or a jacketed bullet. If loading lead you might want to back it down a little depending on hardness.
21.0gr is max with a Speer Gold Dot 240gr bullet.

I mentioned this in a conversation here several years ago, and a few members reported similar experiences w/ 2400. As had a couple of guys my buddy shot silhouettes with, so I guess it's "real." My .44 Mags are loaded w/ either Unique or 296, and my 7 1/2" RH likes both, so I can't say much more...

I agree with Wil on this one and that is not just because I know who he really is and the contributions he has made to our sport. I wouldn't be at all surprised if will hasn't forgotten more than you could happen to ever know so sixgun to you and everyone else that is too lazy to look up your own data maybe reloading is too difficult for you

WIL just tells it like it is. Load manuals are very useful, good to have and can be referenced without a PC.

Aliant doesn't show the specific load online but there are ways to get the info. Some people ask here and get crappy answers. Don't be an internet lawyer please, anyone who's not really one.

I've been loading for the .44 Rem. Mag. for over 50 years, & have tried most every possible combination of bullets & powders. I long ago settled on Hornady bullets (200 & 240 Gr. XTP's now), WW Large Pistol Primers, & WW-296 powder as the most pleasing performers, usually just shy of Max. loads. I do use some 2400 in a few .357 loads yet.

Start at 21gr and work up from there in 1/2gr increments watching for pressure signs. Better yet, if your are looking for a medium load for the 44, use 21gr of 2400. If you are looking for a magnum load, use H110/W296.

I much prefer to get data online from the powder manufactures website where you know you will get the most up-to-date info and latest announcements like recalls. That's not to say cross-checking the data isn't necessary. Using old printed data can be dangerous and there can be mistakes in print also. Never rely on just one source. ...and it doesn't hurt to ask someone elses opinion.

There have been three editions printed, this is the current one. I have all three... Make sure you read the articles in it too!

Wow 3rd edition before I found out about them, been using my latest Speer manual mostly for hand gun, has lots of Ruger Only loads as well as short barrel loads real good info. I've also worked up some of my own loads not printed in any manual, you can never have to many reloading manuals to read and learn something new from.
