Need input on P89

Just came from my favorite dealer and he had a used P89 in like new condition, two magazines and the box for $255.00.

Now I already have a KDP95 and a KDP97, I've had them for a few years now....and they both work great....now!

They both had "issues" and had to be repaired with factory supplied parts before the were reliable.

It seems that the recent Ruger products have also had "issues".

What about the P89? Is it any good? Is there anything to watch out for? What about the price?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

The 89 is my favorite of the P guns. I would say haggle a bit and get it. If you like 9mm. Same mags and ammo as the 95. Too bad it isn't a KP89D so you keep the same theme on your collection. If it is a safe model I personally wouldn't get it but that is just me. Nothing wrong with the safe units I just don't like em.

I think you have the model a bit wrong on your guns though. KP95D & KP97D would be decock only, stainless guns.

P89's are handsome and reliable as stones and about as accurate as a thrown stone as well.

The price is right at least.

Be prepared for considerably less accuracy than either one of your other Ruger SA's.

If you really want one, or have been looking for one, .... fine ... buy it. If you're buying it just because it's cheap, I wouldn't.

I agree with an above poster .... offer $225 OTD and see if he bites .... he should.

I have P89DC...was my second gun ever and I still consider myself a beginner. Nevertheless, I've never had issues with it, no FTF or FTEs, wristing.... Accuracy is pretty good IMHO. I'm not such a great shooter to say that, but some better ones tried it at the range and were very surprised and pleased.
Generally, I like the looks of the gun, like the rugged and robust feel it has (though looking purely at the dimensions, the gun itself is not that bulky and large as people seem to think, it just appears so). What I didn't like were the original grips, so I replaced them with Hogue rubber grip and it's awesome now. I also have tritium sights mounted on it, but that's all the gunsmith attention it ever needed.

I like my P89 for home defense and because it is super reliable and fun to shoot. It will eat anything, from any angle with no missfires or jams which I find a requirement in a SD weapon. Accuracy on the other hand, leaves a bit to be desired. It is plenty good to put a mag full in an intruders chest from across the room, but for target work I'll use my MarkIII target or one of my revolvers.

Rev. I know how to fix your problems with Ruger P accuracy...you need to tighten the loose nut on the end of your P pistol. Should solve the problem :lol: :lol: :lol:

At $255, I'd jump all over it.

I'd say that all depends on what 9MM pistols you've owned.

That could easily explain your experience ..... or that your shooting abilities at a given range are less than the least accurate of the guns that you've owned.

I'm not busting you either. For example .... If you have 4 guns capable of 2, 3, 4, and 5 inch groups at 50 feet, and you're only capable of shooting 6 inch groups .... you'd never KNOW that any of the guns were better than any of the others ... right ? :D

Granted. But I have owned some fine ones, and would gladly engage in a target-shooting contest with you, provided you were willing to wager enough to make it worthwhile. :-)

Darn -- and I passed within 30 minutes or so of you twice within the past two weeks! Unfortunately, I am about driven out for now, and don't know if I could stand the 10+ hours driving to get back up your way right now -- and I KNOW I couldn;t afford the gas -- although, thinking about it, you'd likely end up paying for that, anyway. :-)

Seriously, though, I have had very good accuracy from my P89 DC, in the neighborhood of 1.5 tp 2" at 25 yards with Winchester white box ball ammo from Wal Mart. Not claiming every P89 would do as well, but I feel pretty confident they at least match almost any other out-of-the-box 9mm. Now, the P86 was another story altogether, and I wouldn't have one.
