Anyone going to order this mystery box from Ruger? I saw the email just now, it's $49 but they don't tell you what's inside.

Think it's worth it?

I think I'll do it. I gave $50.00 to NRA today. In return I will receive a wall clock in 6-10 weeks. Anyone else want a 50 spot? Just email me,,, or call collect!

I'm just afraid it's a baseball cap... a style which I can't stand to wear.

I doubt it's a tee-shirt. They wouldn't get the size right. And it couldn't be pepper spray for various state ordinances etc. it's gotta be something though....

Hmmm, I'll think about it until Sunday. Just might do it.

The 30-yr old marketing MBAs have confused dime-store summer-sales antics with selling guns to deadly-serious hunters and shooters. This ploy really cheapens the Ruger name.

Pig in a poke. I will pass.

I put one in the cart and then thought maybe there was something else I needed from the store..... spent about 15 minutes looking but could not find a thing I really needed.... was sorely tempted to get the 9 round mag for my LC9s but so far I'm holding out.

then I was thinking if I got one of the mystery boxes I could probably sell it here in a few years as a collectors item.

I stopped buying from shopruger.com when I found Ruger 44/77 mags at a LGS for $10.00 less than Ruger. No thanks!

This marketing plan is probably based on a meeting of the shopruger management and it was pointed out that they had too many base ball caps and certain types of tee shirts that it seems no one wanted to buy.... solution put them in a mystery box and sell them.

Had a friend sort of do this at an auction at a convention.... he donated a plain brown box market "solar powered flash light" a guy who had had one two many drinks from the cash bar paid $75 for that eco friendly 'green' flash light.....

it was a $2 hand mirror.....

Let's face it folks,,, Ruger is a Corporation. A corporation in the business to make money. There are 2000+ employees, 3 plants, a foundry, & numerous vendors who employee people to support The Sturm, Ruger & Co. Lots of jobs, stockholders, & such just like any other big company.
None of it would survive if they didn't make money.
Yes, Bill started with just a few folks at a little red "barn" but that's no longer the company. It hasn't been that small in a long time. And, Bill didn't market any "extras" for a fer years until after his company was a success.
Now, the company is a big business. Marketing is just a portion of the big picture. Selling merchandise is just another way to make money for the company. Yes, you can buy some of the stuff they offer in other places for less money. That is normal business. I just checked into buying an accessory for a firearm, first from the parent company, and also from Midway. I can save $$ buying from Midway, BUT,, availability can be an issue. Big companies sell in bulk to distributing companies at a discount, but sell a LOT of a product. That is also normal business.

So, what we have is a company, using a fun marketing tool, to sell some mystery merchandise, at a discount rate. According to the ad, the value of the box is $100, that you can get for half that. And, if it turns out to be something you can't use or want, as noted above, you can always sell it later.

It's just a different way of marketing stuff. No need to bash a company for trying to make money.

IMO it is worth bashing the CEO (Tell the CEO" email) for allowing this to happen to a once-distinguished company.

This is what my previous post was about. Marketing (not manufacturing) selling cheap hard-to-move chinese stuff to rubes. If anyone buys this and the merchandise turns out to be other than cheap chinese-made stuff, I'll take that back, but I most likely won't have to.

This IS in fact, a company built on building & selling deadly weapons, to serious people, Americans who think and act. Now they're searching for foolish customers.

The company has been reduced to carnival-antics. This is a garbage marketing scheme, nothing more. Even the Marketing MBA next door shakes his head at the concept of selling an unknown item to someone who just has more money than common sense. Pig in a poke. Look it up. What's next? Cans of Ruger Striped Paint?

Simpy put, it is sad for me to see Ruger being reduced to this. Very sad.

Don't care what they SAY.......no way there is $100 worth of "stuff" in that box they are selling for 50 bucks. Money grab plain and simple with some cheap, worthless crap thrown in a "collector" box. A company that TELLS me something is a collector item............pass

Ruger sent me free , 3 ERC for 3 SA. A Vaquero, OM SS 1969, and one for my Super BH that has a studded barrel. And numerous screws, springs, scope bases, we all agree that the service is good with Ruger. I'm going to spring for one. Hope a knife is in box. Last ERC they sent , there was a grey XL t-shirt and a summer hat.

mohavesome, I have to politely disagree with you.

I fully agree that when Bill started, the company was solely building & selling firearms. However, as early as the late 1950's, Bill was selling stuff or giving away stuff with his logo. Employee service gifts, Christmas gifts to employees, patches, decals, salesman trinkets to give away. (I have a salesman trinket toy made in 1956.) Later on in they decided to market items with their logo. Kinda like all major companies. Just look at all the "branded" stuff people wear, every day, all the time. Sports teams, make HUGE amounts of money marketing stuff to their fans. It's a business FACT that people will buy, & use "branded" stuff. And a huge portion of what these other companies sell is foreign made. I live in NC,, and close to Charlotte. The Carolina Panthers is a huge franchise here, and Panther branded stuff is EVERYWHERE. Buyers of that stuff can't buy a quality firearm to be proud of, they just support the team & all the huge salaries the players make. At least with Ruger, you can choose to own a quality firearm & NOT buy any branded stuff.

And you totally miss the fact that the company is in the business to make MONEY. Firearms are just PART of the equation now, albeit the main focus of it. And yes,, many people do want to own Ruger branded stuff. By selling such stuff, showing the brand to the public, can & will get others to look at the company & products.
A good example of marketing;
I kept seeing decals & such all over the place that said; "Salt Life." I just thought is was about folks who enjoyed being around the ocean. yet, I kept seeing a lot of these decals. I accidentally discovered it was a brand of sunglasses. While they are not for me,,, their marketing has worked by getting their brand out there & visible.
And it's simple,,, if you do not desire to purchase it,,, you do not have to.

And PLEASE understand, I'm not upset at your viewpoints, it's just that I look at things from a business standpoint, and VERY respectively disagree with you.

I'm full on with contender on this one! Some get it, others...well, if they have the ideas that would work as well as they think, by all means get yourself to the big table and get your ideas in motion. See which has a better yield. There's a reason the folks in the positions they're in are there and not the objectionable finding fault at everything folks. Easy to be on the keyboard instead of the board of directors. ;)

Easy on the personals...
My comments stem from the mystery box and the type of people they're hoping will send them $50. I am not talking (and the concept has nothing to do with) employee gifts and such.

This whole thread is about selling a box of "guaranteed retail value". I'd love it if turned out to be something other than (free advertising) Tshirts, ballcaps or leftover NRA show gimme trinkets. So lets hear from the folks who sent them 50 bucks!!! Who says the economy is bad ???

Ruger's not twisting any arms for people to buy these, just a marketing ploy for customers to have fun with. It would be funny if these boxes started arriving with quality stuff after the purchase deadline.

mohavesam, PLEASE understand I was NOT trying to be too personal, just addressing your comments, HOPEFULLY in a way to allow folks to study why the selling of branded merchandise & marketing is successful. And how Ruger is no different than any other big company, wanting to make money. Please accept my apologies if I offended you.

I just bought one, Had to-i may be a sucker- I'm testing my faith in Ruger, Hoping this isnt just some useless junk they need to clear out,lol

I'll let everyone know what i get,

My guess is that if any customers thought it was originally worth $100 Ruger would not be selling it for $50. But then again maybe they're just standup guys and gals and want to spread some good will.

Thought about it a bit more but really have no need for a knife, Ruger branded or not. Not a hat person and really not keen on any of the current shirt offerings. Every other item they currently offer, I either hover not interested in. Passing. If after the fact it's something really nice, oh well, I missed. Not the first time, won't be the last but not going to lose sleep over it.

I have mine. NO collector box. 2 white Ruger T-shirts only. I was charged $30.00. I was hoping for a Collector Box that would be worth$$$$$,, like a Ruger Revolver box. Oh well,,,,,
