Ok, here's the deal. Many moons ago, I signed up for 3 months to a website called "Classmates". If you're not familiar with it, it's a website folks go on to contact their old High School classmates, sometimes coordinate reunions, and it has a whole bunch of the yearbooks for almost every High School in America that you can check out. Anyway, I used it a few times while I was a member, then let the membership lapse. Anyway, about every month or so, in an effort to entice me back, they'll send me an email saying that three of my classmates have checked my profile, and if I click the three links in the email, they'll let me see who they were without a membership. Out of curiosity, I usually go and see who it was, just for the heck of it, without any intention of signing up again. Today, I got this month's version of that email, so I clicked on the links. The first one was, surprisingly, one of my wife's cousins, with whom I was on the swim/water polo team. I say surprisingly, because he passed away about a year ago. Kind of makes it hard for him to visit my profile. So, I'm betting all this time they've sent me these emails, claiming classmates have checked my profile, that they've just grabbed random names from my class, and claimed they "visited" my profile. So, now I'm betting most of these alleged visits are bogus. Not that I really care all that much, but it's an interesting marketing ploy. It also makes me think that the next time I get one of these emails, I won't have to waste my time checking it out.

Does it say WHEN they checked it?
No, but it says "people have been checking your profile". Phasing like that makes me think it's something ongoing recently. I'm pretty sure they're just grabbing random names from my class and saying they've checked my profile.

It also could be that some scammer signed up as that now dead swim team classmate and is using it to lure in you and others.
I'd bet this is more likely.
I had a high school buddy I had not seen in years contact me a while back on Fake book wanting to be friends.... so I did and then in a conversation he was trying to 'help' me get some government money... seems Fedex had brought him a check for a couple hundred thousand and he was going to tell me how to get the same...... this scammer actually used my high school friends yearbook picture on the Facebook page. I asked this impersonator a simple question about something we did back then and did not get and answer to it just wanting to help me in the process of getting the money.....ding!

I'll bet it's less nefarious and more likely they store who looked and randomly grab a few to try and entice you.

I believe Classmates was the one that I was getting emails from 20 years ago with the same "they looked" - "you can look for free" hook. I remember contacting one of them and they said they had looked a couple years before.

Legit business, not a scam! They have been around for quite some time. I was a member for a while and was able to reconnect with several class mates that I would have swore up and down I would never hear from again. I found it fairly interesting, especially the new (married) last names of the girls. And yes, when you leave the fold, they will try to lure you back with click bait.

I have a few friends from college, but there is nobody in high school I would be interested in seeing again.

Blume might be correct in that someone havked the account of the old friend. A few years ago I heard an interesting quote that more people with Facebook accounts are now dead than alive.

I don’t know if FB deactivates the accounts of people who have died or if that statistic is still valid.

The power of the internet knows NO limits. :)

It has been well over half a century since High School for me. In that time, the only former classmate that contacted me out of the blue was a guy that just got a job as a financial advisor. He wanted me to let him manage my vast wealth . . .

I think you are right Kevin, how is Facebook going to know? And how do you close an account anyway?
My wife hates that I have an account with them.... She says it's because of all the scams from there or what she hears, she does not do internet and only hears that from friends....I also thinks she hears about old geezers like me hooking back up with old girl friends....* she has no clue as to the emails I get from Ukrainian women and Nigerian princes and such... I do need to go update my farce book account to my current status.

*I did have an old girl friend send me a friend request a few years ago.... I did not respond.... that woman was crazy....

I've never been interested in publicizing myself on the various "look at me, here I am" websites. Following that preference/bias, I've never been interested in anyone else's grandeur either. But that's just me; I can see the need in others.

I gave up on Classmates.com and Military.com many many years ago. FB performs both those functions and more. I’m one of the “younger” guys on here (I’m “only” 62). I use it to keep up with old Army buddies, family that lives out of state, and classmates.
