My Latest Woodworking Project

Here is my latest woodworking project. It is a "Secretary" made from Curly Maple and with the doors made of Birdseye Maple. It is of solid wood except for the Waterfall Bubinga, which is a veneer over 3/4 in. plywood. The design was of my own and I made everything including the molding. Notice the big cove molding on the top. That was made by pushing the board across the blade of the table saw at an angle, taking only about a 1/16 of an inch at a time. I have to say! It turned out much better then I would have hoped. Hope you like the pictures.

Notice the beautiful Birdseye maple on the three drawers. I trimmed the outside of the drawers with Cherry and it will turn a nice shade of chocolate in 3 or 4 months.

Here is a picture of the Waterfall Bubinga on the writing shelf. What a pretty piece of veneer.

Here is a close up of the 3 sets of drawers with some of the best pieces of Birdseye maple that I have ever seen. I was lucky to find it.

Here is a picture of the slanted writing panel in the down position showing the inside of the desk. Notice the Birdseye Maple drawers.

This is the two inside drawers.

Even the back of the upper case is Curly Maple.

The side of the upper case is one of the nicest piece of Curly Maple in this piece of furniture.

Another piece of nice Curly Maple on the base.

Notice that the drawers are dove tailed, and the slides are full extension 100 lb. rated.

That is beautiful! How much time did you spend designing and building it? As a very young man I worked as a joiner at John Trumpy Yacht Yard helping build the furniture for his very expensive boats. Most people have no idea how much work is involved in such a project.

I'm not sure how many hours, I didn't keep count. I worked on it for 2 or 3 months, off and on. Some days I would work almost all day, and some days only a few minutes, just wasn't in the mood.

That is beautiful! How much time did you spend designing and building it?

It took me a few days each, for the top and the bottom, to design it, and then I would find something that would not look right or not work and I would have to change the design. But in the end everything fell into place and it all came together.

WoW ... as you can tell from my post count I don't spend a lot of time posting. But I have lurked here for the past 13-14 years and have seen some beautiful guns, grips, knives, holsters, even photographs. But I've never commented ... just not my thing.

THIS deserves a response so that the effort put in to this piece does not go without compliments. Just gorgeous ... one helluva piece. Your offspring should be arm wrestling over eventual ownership.

Just think of Antique Roadshow in 150 years trying to place this with some manufacturer and placing a value to it based on some eccentricity that their believed artisan always figured in to their furniture, only to realize and be befuddled because it's a one-off, without a doubt museum quality, piece of art, made by a part-time hobbyist. THAT would be hilarious.

I enjoyed seeing this ... good luck with the next piece; post more pics of other pieces; and stay safe while woodworking.
