The Navy is developing mothership drones to patrol coastal waters. Relax - they will only terminate bad guys... :shock: :shock: :shock:

Funny because I remember probably 20+ years ago being down in the keys and there was a very high up tethered blimp off Key West that was run by the government to keep watch on anyone coming in via water or air... the locals called it Fat Albert.

Also, should not these drones be under the Coast Guard not the navy?

In one of the big musical numbers from The Life Of Brian, Eric Idle reminds us to “always look on the bright side of life.” Norman, a new artificial intelligence project from MIT, doesn’t know how to do that.

That’s because Norman is a psychopath, just like the Hitchcock character that inspired the research team to create him.

Like so many of these projects do, the MIT researchers started out by training Norman on freely available data found on the Web. Instead of looking at the usual family-friendly Google Images fare, however, they pointed Norman toward darker imagery. Specifically, the MIT crew stuck Norman in a creepy subreddit to do his initial training.

Armed with this twisted mass of digital memories, Norman was then asked to caption a series of Rorschach inkblots. The results are predictably creepy. Let’s have a look at a couple, shall we?

Going way back in my experiences with "computer intelligence", I learned that digitally generated thought processes stop at the first viable answer to the question(s) presented(or they used to anyway). Unlike human intelligence that can hold that answer while searching past experiences for additional possible answers, the machine takes the initially chosen answer and prosecutes it with whatever resources are available.
This is the dangerous aspect of AI.

In an interview, Arnold said "There is after all, no evidence available that the first two Terminator stories didn't actually happen. I mean, if you had an earthshaking story to tell, how would you reach the thinking person..."
Then the third Terminator movie was obviously fiction. Hey, it only takes one mainframe to figure out how to control every other computer to do its task d'jour.

This headline is reality. It is the US gubmint. And we are surrounded by water. ;)

My question is why do they need a Mothership and sub / airplane drones when they already have those ' Predator Drones' and others that can stay aloft for more than 24 hours and be controlled from anywhere in the US and even deliver ordinance? I wonder when the Navy won't need sailors anymore?
