The dogs got me up at 0400 to be fed and go for their "walk". It has been too hot of late and working 48 hour weeks again so my longer walks have suffered. Today it was cool, low 60's, so I put my long sleeved camo shirt, pants, cap and black boots. .44spcl Charter Arms bulldog, and a light camo vest for a cover and to carry any specimens I might find. I hadn't even left my property when a doe came out of the woods 44 paces from me. Kept looking at me (I was frozen like a tree) , then casually strolled away to my neighbors. That was worth getting up for! Got to a parcel of land diagonal to mine and found the chanterelles (AKA pigs ears) and filled a quart plastic bag of them for later consumption. Checked a few other places for other mushroom varieties (saw a few old clavaria, some fresh lactaria), but there were not enough to collect. On the way back something big thumped the ground, but couldn't find the source (bear?). I also had a deer blow and wheeze at me multiple times in the area the doe had come from. All and all a good hour long walk. 8) I covered probably 2 miles.

We have cooler weather due here tues/wed/thur.. I'll take the dog out for a walk when I get home at midnite then. That thump ? Uh oh, I do believe there's a squatch in these woods ! LOL. Squatch loads, hmmnnn.. back to the loading bench.

My Lab pup lets me sleep in until 5:30ish then lets me know its time. We do a tour around our 6 acres and she gets down to business. I have an approx. 1/3 acre of asparagus that has now gone to seed for the year. Very pretty seeing the ferns all coated in heavy dew this morning. Several mornings I've put up a large Red Tailed Hawk at the end of my property. Spoke with my neighbor last night and she said the hawks have a nest just south of my property. Shortly after I settled down at the kitchen table with my coffee I had a doe come into the yard and start browsing the apple leaves. All better than TV could ever be. Love the sights of an early morning. All things I missed during those years in the shop.

Going for walks with my dog is unfortunately not working out too well lately. He wants to go, but often can't make it more than about 1/2 mile. He's almost 13, which is old for a large dog, but he seems to think he is still young and healthy (at least at first). It breaks my heart to see this wonderful friend and companion fading away. Now he falls every so often, and seems to get sick more often. I know the day is not far off where I will lose him. We are getting a new puppy (today in fact) and are hoping that a young companion will make the old guy feel better and that he will help socialize the new member of the household.

Reading this thread just made me think about how nice it is to go out early in the morning with man's best friend.

Vito I am there with you. My Kuvasz/Husky mix is 14 and weighs 100 lbs., on meds for urinary problems. Occasionally has diarrhea- thank you pepto bismol tablets. She only walks about 100 feet now. Sometimes I have to help her to stand up. My two Shelties are 12 and very active still. When the big one dies, she will not be replaced. She will leave a big hole in my heart. I had her mother on the farm, and she only let one neighbors dog breed her- the husky. One puppy each year x 2! Same sweet talking dog! This one was the first puppy.

I'm sorry for your pet's decline. I lost a cat in 2010 and another in 2011,sisters from a shelter. I have one left and he was a stray kitten I found 8 years ago. Lost a dog in 2007.
