Dennis Weaver commented in an interview that he regretted the decision to play Chester with a limp.

Dennis Weaver commented in an interview that he regretted the decision to play Chester with a limp.

I may have heard that same interview. He especially noted how hard it was to mount a horse.

Supposedly the producers gave Chester that limp to avoid any conflict with the star, James Arness. Dennis Weaver was fairly tall himself, and considered handsome. Producers wanted no detraction from Matt Dillon.

Also the Colt was 7 1/2" since shorter barreed Colts looked too dimunitive in Arness' hand.

So I've read.
