More grip frame swapping shenanigans.

Just when I get comfortable moving frames and hammers around the demons of change strike. The new victim is a 3 1/2" mid frame vaquero/new vaquero Sheriff and the intention was a bisley hammer and a birdshead retrieved from a single six.
Sorry no pictures ,I already put it back togeather.
Questions.
The old school grip frame has little wedge shaped projections facing foward that fit into the cylinder frame ,the new frames do not. Just flat on the front. Do these projections just need to be removed?
Above the trigger guard there is a small groove in the grip frame. The pawl has a knot on the end of it which hangs down below the bottom into the grooved grip frame. I guess just carve a hole in the grip frame.
Lastly,This is a locking hammer strut assemblyand the birdshead is not. Is this a simple swap?
What do you think? Will this stuff work or will I have wrecked a pretty cool part?

You should be able to perform the swap. The "lock" equipped grip frame will need to have the lock and shorter/softer mainspring & strut swapped with the grip frame.

Yes, the "locaters" can be ground off. The "small groove" you mention will probably need to be "in place".

what does it look like?

The Single Six Hammer will work but is short on a New Vaquero and would not look correct, but like I said will work

Strut fits the grip frame, get a correct strut assembley, in this case it would be the "other strut assembley" might want to place a WTB in the classifieds for this part as there are a few laying around.

The protruding ears, No they don't need to be there, remove if needed.

and the Small Groove of what you speak of,,, Well check your parts as I don't think it has a thing to do with the Pawl.
It is for a little extra room for the 180 bend end of the gate spring, sometimes you need this and sometimes not, this is a fine tune area in either the spring or frame.

Okay, I got some pictures before the responses so here they are .

The two frames.

Projecting ears.

No ears

Flat back of frame with no hole to put ears.

Small groove.

Bottom of pawl projecting below the frame and bottom of pawl.

I can see no purpose for the lump on the bottom of the pawl.
When I get it reassembled I'll get a picture of the hammer for you.

The hump on the bottom of the pawl is to get it to cam out of the way and then the index plunger work's without the pawl touching the cam, this all happening when the loading gate is opened.

Funny thing is I have never noticed the little spot in the Grip Frame. but it must need the room.

The strut that came with the birdshead frame will still work, keep it w/ the Grip Frame and the Lock/Strut with that Grip Frame.

Yes the Most of the SIngle Actions coming out now do not have the Lugs and the new Grip Frame's coming out don't have them. Grind Away.

My stainless Old Army grip frame does not have the ears -Milled flat before I received it - Nos from one of the bigger parts companies.

Alright, I filed and ground away. After about 3 assemblys and disassemblys and just a little cursing it's put together. Esta bien. This is the Lipseys 44 spl sheriff.

Now the funny part is I'm not to sure I like it :roll: The grip some how feels small and slippery. I think I remember why I took it off the 32 mag.
Guess I'll bang out a set of wood grips and thin them out a little. See if that helps any.

Remember the Birdshead is nothing but a Round Butt XR3-RED, Go ahead and try it,,,, a set of regular XR3-RED Grips will install just fine.
