Montado POI Problem Solved? FOLLOWUP

Saw a Montado that appealed to me, but have been reading board comments about these shooting way low and left, but most posts were from a few years ago. Does anyone have a more recent Montado, and do the same problems exist? Seem like Ruger could have easily fixed this if it was such a widespread issue.

Ever now and then "low-left" is the gun's fault but most times, it's shooter induced. That said though, it's perty-common for the front sight on a fixed-sight SA revolver to need "filed down" a bit. But the thing about that is, a lot of guys seem to enjoy experimenting with different loads, so altering the sight(s) to a certain load aint an option.

It might be that you'll need to decide what it is you intend to use a certain gun for before deciding which gun to buy......just sayin'.

I bought one a little over a year ago, it shot low and right about 7-8" at 20 yards, I filed down the blade and got it okay for elevation and filed the rear groove as far as I could and it never got better that 5-6" to the right.

Thank goodness there are gunsmiths like "Clements Custom" who can install S&W pre war sights. I love it now and it is my favorite packing gun.

Why didn't you send it back to Ruger to be regulated for windage? I just did on a GP100 and they are installing a new barrel as it was over torqued at the factory.

I had a pair back in March that were at the tail end of Davidson's stock at that time. Windage was spot on but elevation required a little (Very Little) file work. They are certainly worth the little bit of effort it takes to regulate them.

Thank you but I can't take credit for the forestrap grooves.
Since it's a Montado, the grip frame came with grooves on the 1st production. I don't think they do any longer. But that smaller XR3 grip frame wrapped my knuckles with some of my 45 loads so I replaced with the XR3-RED shown in the 1st photo.
The grooved grip frame is now on my 44 Spl FT. same size as the original on the FTs and New Vaq Sheriff:

Enjoyed the gun, fun to shoot, but it will require some work to get it where it needs to be. Can't quite figure why Ruger puts these high front sights on them, especially after being a known issue. Oh well.

Ruger puts a high front sight so there is enough for all loads. Heavy bullet loads shoot higher and it's much harder to add front sight but simple to file down. Take a file to the range and file and shoot till it's on target. Then at home shape like original and polish.

mine shot 5" left and a couple inches low at 50 feet, so i had a local smith do some work. he regulated the sights to my favorite load by tightening the barrel, then ramped the face, filed down the front sight to match the load, and serrated it. i then blackened front ramp and rear sight area with matte black paint.

and after seeing the stunning pixs of hondo44's montado (and getting his direct input/help. thnx so much hondo44!!!), i followed suit with a few extras.

here's a pix of my montado showing additional work i then did: radiused all edges. an action job. removed lock system. removed billboard warning in barrel. finally i added a custom belt mt colt-style extra-short base pin and a stainless crescent ejector. i left the cheese-grater grips on 'cause i like 'em, but i did radius all edges.

plus i ordered a custom milt sparks HSR basketweave 3.75" holster, then loaded it with 265 gr Cast Performance WFNGC on top of 8.5 unique.

Shooting LOW is a MINOR problem to correct. My 44 mag VAQUERO that got cut to 3.5 inches shoots EIGHT inches low and a bit right. After the trigger job, the front sight can be filed or milled to the proper height. (I may re-barrel or sell this little guy.)

Shooting HIGH is MAJOR to correct. I got a SMOKIN' DEAL on a 7.5 inch 44 mag VAQUERO that had been carbona blued and REAL color case hardening on frame and hammer. Unfortunately, the front sight was cut down and it shoots about 8 inches high. The only cure is a new front sight and I REALLY don't want to screw up the beautiful blue job.

I really like Original Size VAQUEROS and thankfully most of them are close enough to point of aim/point of impace. These problems can be cured with the help of a good pistolsmith, but it's a PITA and don't come cheap.

That's one fine Montado! I'm liking that Belt Mtn super short cyl pin even better than the short one they sold me for my 44 Sheriff above, might have to get one of those.
