Got another Mini 30 question. I've had my Mini for a couple months now. Its shoots any and everything I feed through it. I have been looking at mid priced hunting ammo for it. (for whitetail) I found several boxes of Federal 7.62x39 (Soviet) at my local gunshop. My question is why Soviet, any difference ? but why is the Federal box stamped Soviet ?
I understand different countrys of manufacture but confused of the whole Federal ammo Soviet thing....... Just want to make sure it will safetly shoot before I send em down range.

I don't yet have a Mini 30 but do have an AR 15 in X39 and a CZ 527 carbine. I think there is alot of "aftermarket packaging" going on in which a Herters or Federal will buy up what is basically S & B or Russian manufacture steel cased ammo and then drop it into their own boxes of 20 packaging. It's all shot well in my rifles, some a bit hotter than others but all OK.

I cant swear to it but read that some companies use a .308 bullet in their hunting ammo when it should be .311 so might want to keep that in mind.
Im not sure if it will make a difference but just something to be aware of.

I can't see the reason for going low budget or foreign with hunting ammo. One or two 20 round boxes has to be all you will need for hunting.... 10-15 rounds to sight in and then 5 to hunt with?

It's not that, I broke the gun in with a ton of inexpensive ammo and it shoots great. I bought Rem. 125gr. PSP ammo to sight in a Burris ballistic plex (to hunt with) and it shockingly shoots 2" groups off a lead sled. (about 3" after about 40 rounds) so i'm pleased, especially for the caliber. it's was the Federal ammo thing. I just wanted to give it a shot and see how it does but was kinda nervous. Federal makes several types of ammo for it but that dang blue and black box that says (Soviet) keeps me wondering. But yeah your right

Then give it a try.... I remember buying a couple hundred rounds of 7.62x39 soviet ammo at a gun show one time... all full metal jacket but the case had "soft point for hunting" stenciled on it. The guy selling the stuff said it was so it could be 'slipped' in to the country easier... but I doubt it.
